In preparation for The Golden Raven, here’s my little Bingo prediction cards.
(One of these are more serious than the other.)
my favourite scene of tsc is when cat saves jean from fans by asking him in french if he wants to fuck and jean is so shocked he just stops functioning and forgets to be an asshole long enough for them to drag him away. 10/10 problem solving from catalina alvarez
*Said with a heavy French accent
I have a slight fascination in names and their meanings/historical context of how they're structured, and as far as the Perfect Court goes, there are a few fun facts about them that add an interesting layer to their backstories. We know Riko taking Jean’s middle name "Yves" was intentional and significant in signifying his lack of identity in the Nest. But Riko and Kevin also have (possibly unintentional) significants in their names as well.
For Riko, in Western cultures, we generally think of "Rico," the masculine Spanish/Italian name meaning "king" or "ruler," but in Japanese, the name "Riko" is traditionally a feminine name meaning "jasmine child" or "loyal child" depending on the characters used to spell it.
In Kevin’s case, it's a missing middle name, which is actually a bit more significant than Jean missing his. In Europe, middle names became a thing because of the high population prior to the Black Plague. (Multiple Johns or Marys could be distinguished by their middle name.) But, in Celtic regions, the belief in not telling people your middle name was associated with the fae. If they ask for your name and you don't give them your middle, then they don't have your "true name," and you're safe. As Kevin's mom was Irish, she definitely would have given him one as it's a normal practice. But by the Moriyamas removing it, it strips him of some of his cultural heritage.
Take this information and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. I just think it's an interesting thing to point out.
I think it would be adorable if Jeremy started playing songs with French lyrics in them to make Jean feel more at home. Or if Jeremy secretly learned French to surprise Jean. Either scenario would be cute.
(The Sunshine Court, ch.13)
I'm still not over this in any way, shape, or form. Like, firstly, what would he have done if she told him no?
But also, can you imagine this from Cat's pov? This ex-raven, who everyone thinks is going to be this huge problem, is actually one of the most gentle souls you could ever meet. He punched your girlfriend hard enough to make her bleed, but it was an accident triggered by touching him without warning at the wrong moment. Despite this, he immediately submit to the idea of being punished, and apologises when you ask it of him. And the longer you live with him, the more you learn of the horrors that mar his past — The scars, the lack of autonomy, the rape — But he still cares enough to ask about the safety of your friend? It wasn't his business, but he had to ask. No one cared enough to protect him in the past, but he still has it in him to care for someone he doesn't really know.
And I love so much that she answers him seriously. She wants him to know that Cody is safe, of course, but she really needs him to know that she wouldn't just allow them to be unsafe like that. She wouldn't be so heartless to tease them if they were in danger. She has a good idea of a lot of the things that went down with Jean and the Ravens, and she needs him to know that things are different with the Trojans. Even if he doesn't trust them yet, she'll say it as much as he needs.
Despite everything, Jean is a good man, and I reckon she'll say that as many times as he needs, too.
Neil: *staring non-stop at Andrew*
Jean: *not so subtle and looking at Jeremy every chance he got*
Kevin: If I were attracted to a blonde man, I'd keep that to myself.
So we agree that our boys are the embodiment of the 3 classic responses to trauma.
Fight: Andrew
Flight: Neil
Freeze: Kevin
Now, may I present you:
Fawn: Jean-Yves Moreau
while I'm aftg posting I wanna say some Jean angst
Jean was so horrified by Neil's monologue of insults to Riko because he knew what'd happen to him if Riko was genuinely hurt or upset by it
Jean knew Riko wouldn't take that shit, and I'm not sure if he was scared for Neil or for himself, but regardless, he knew the fallout would get somebody hurt, and he was horrified of that
the Neil rant is discussed a lot, but. Jean's terror afterward now that we know what happened between him and Riko is. agonizing.
I want to write a whole Riko analysis about how he's obviously a massive piece of shit but is also a genuinely nuanced character who spent his entire life in fight mode. I could talk about this for ages. I hate Riko as much as everyone else but goddamn TSC contextualizes every little first trilogy Ravens scene into developing a whole new meaning
Be careful that Riko isn't looking...
It's Jean!!!
Trying digital again, it's a struggle out here but I'm not too displeased with it...
Take this man to get a tattoo. Take 👏 this👏 man 👏 to 👏 get 👏 a 👏 tattoo!! GAH theres nothing else that can make him reach peak hotness (big messy manbun 👀) like a tattoo can.
No but really, I can see him getting like blackberry flowers or maybe seashells in remembrance of Elodie. Something simple and sweet, very little coloring thats well shaded on his forearm or his bicep. Maybe even putting her name in fancy cursive (if he can bring himself to be so sentimental, I know he struggles to say/hear her name)
As much as I would really like to see him reunited with her (remains)
[ talked about here https://www.tumblr.com/smittenmeraki/778038352449601536/no-because-i-keep-thinking-of-neil-having-his?source=share ],
I dont think that will happen and this is a beautiful way for him to pay tribute and put her to rest.
at some point after tgr, the trojans sit cat down intervention-style
‘cat you CANNOT keep making jean hotter. you taught him how to cook. you taught him how to drive a motorcycle and helped him get his own. you’re getting him to show his soft boy side in public. you helped convince him to be a dog dad cat we CAN’T HANDLE ANY MORE the whole team is obsessed with him and jeremy is DYING can you have some CONSIDERATION cat’
So I may or may not have gone straight home from work and spent the last three hours teaching myself to animate...
Anyway heres a sneak peak :D
Who knows, maybe I'll actually finish it 🤷♀️
This is exactly what I meant when I said crash out
Let him be violent!! Yes, all of the ideas of doing pottery and biking are amazing, but those are sources of happiness, he still needs a rage outlet. I love the idea of him finding happiness in mundane things and I truly hope we get some of that, but I don't think he is going to be able to heal until he actually feels and processes his anger, because he truly is a raging inferno of hatred, let him burn things so something new can grow in the ashes.
"Jean considered biting the fingers that slipped pills between his lips" tsc p11
"Jean felt the tendrils of an old and ugly rage stir, and he knotted a bruised hand in the sheets like he could somehow hold it at bay through sheer force alone." p22-23
"'If you tell me to follow his lead, I will cut your throat open with my teeth', Jean said." p26
"The urge to tear Nathaniel's face open was so fierce he could barely breathe." p28
"It was the only way this worked: if Jean signed something that said he had to behave to be allowed to stay on the lineup, he could bite his tongue and stay his fists. It'd piss him off beyond the telling, but he could follow orders if it meant surviving another day. Without that black-and-white command his nature would get the better of him sooner or later, and then there'd be no saving him." p65-66
"Finding out he was little more than Riko's dog outside of practices had him lashing out with all the youthful rage he could muster." p79
"He was furious at Abby for implying he'd never tried to fight [...] 'Fuck you,' Jean said quietly, then louder: 'Fuck you.'" p79
"Jean couldn't explain that restless rage" p90
"'Yes,' he said, and if he didn't sound sure, he at least sounded angry. 'Let them all burn. I hope none of them survive.'" p142
"He wanted to throw Jeremy into a wall just to prove he could" p242
"Jean was a starving dog on a short chain who'd learned years ago not to bite back." p252
not using tumblr again until I finish reading The Golden Raven
imagine being that good of a writer that, even in third person, you can describe your protagonist personality so well, that even we who have read Neil's pov for three books were shocked seeing how other people (Jean) see him
can anyone tell me if is there going to be a TSC Vol. 2!?!?!?? I physicaly cannot live without it, I'm obsessed, I haven't been able to read anything else because I just won't stop thinking about it, it's getting unhealthy
