I keep thinking about the point a guy said about the song “Imagine” and it’s enduring popularity in a BBC doc: “It tells me: People say they want world peace. People say they want income equality. But the most they will ever do is buy a cheap £1 tape cassette song about it. John Lennon had a room in his house just to keep all his fur coats in. No one ever mentions that.”

Elvis Costello: “Wasn’t it a millionaire who said imagine no possessions?”

This Is Why Scientists Will Never Exactly Solve General Relativity

“One of the most valuable lessons I ever got in my life came during the first day of my first college math class on differential equations. The professor told us, “Most of the differential equations that exist cannot be solved. And most of the differential equations that can be solved cannot be solved by you.” This is exactly what General Relativity is — a series of coupled differential equations — and the difficulty that it presents to all those who study it.

We cannot even write down the Einstein field equations that describe most spacetimes or most Universes we can imagine. Most of the ones we can write down cannot be solved. And most of the ones that can be solved cannot be solved by me, you, or anyone. But still, we can make approximations that allow us to extract some meaningful predictions and descriptions. In the grand scheme of the cosmos, that’s as close as anyone’s ever gotten to figuring it all out, but there’s still much farther to go. May we never give up until we get there.”

In our best theory of gravity, General Relativity, we can compute to arbitrary accuracy the effects on matter of any spacetime that we can write down. Unfortunately, most of the spacetimes that we can dream up in our head aren’t ones that we can write down, and most of the ones that we can write down can only be solved approximately, not exactly.

This is not a flaw nor a benefit: it is simply a property of the theory that we have. Is it the final answer? Perhaps not. But it’s the best one we’ve got so far. Here’s what it means.

This Simple Thought Experiment Shows Why We Need Quantum Gravity

“The description that General Relativity puts forth — that of matter telling space how to curve, and curved space telling matter how to move — needs to be augmented to include an uncertain position that has a probability distribution to it. Whether gravity is quantized or not is still an unknown, and has everything to do with the outcome of such a hypothetical experiment. How an uncertain position translates into a gravitational field, exactly, remains an unsolved problem on the road to a full quantum theory of gravity. The principles that underlie quantum mechanics must be universal, but how those principles apply to gravity, and in particular to a particle passing through a double slit, is a great unknown of our time.”

Perhaps the greatest holy grail in theoretical physics is the quest for a quantum theory of gravity. For all the gravitational phenomena we’ve ever measured, observed, or subjected to a test, General Relativity has come through with predictions that match what we’ve seen exactly. For all the other physical phenomena in the Universe, the rules of quantum field theory and the Standard Model of particle physics match up perfectly. But what would happen if we tried to apply General Relativity to an inherently quantum phenomenon? In particular, what happens if we fire a single particle, like an electron, through a double slit? What happens to that particle’s gravitational field?

Believe it or not, measuring that (or something analogous to it) would tell us whether gravity is a fundamentally quantum force or not! Come learn why this is arguably the most important, first stop on the road to quantum gravity.

“You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. It’s their mistake, not my failing.”

I, a universe of atoms, an atom in the Universe

A poem by Richard Feynman in his address to the National Academy of Sciences: There are the rushing waves mountains of molecules each stupidly minding its own business trillions apart yet forming white surf in unison Ages on ages before any eyes could see year after year thunderously pounding the shore as now. For whom, for what? On a dead planet with no life to entertain. Never at rest tortured by energy wasted prodigiously by the Sun poured into space. A mite makes the sea roar. Deep in the sea all molecules repeat the patterns of one another till complex new ones are formed. They make others like themselves and a new dance starts. Growing in size and complexity living things masses of atoms DNA, protein dancing a pattern ever more intricate. Out of the cradle onto dry land here it is standing: atoms with consciousness; matter with curiosity. Stands at the sea, wonders at wondering: I a universe of atoms an atom in the Universe.

Snakes Shed Their Skin To Allow For Further Growth And To Remove Parasites That May Have Attached To

Snakes shed their skin to allow for further growth and to remove parasites that may have attached to their old skin. As a snake grows, its skin becomes stretched. Unlike human skin, a snake’s skin doesn’t grow as the animal grows. Eventually, a snake’s skin reaches a point where further growth is not possible.

When that occurs, a new layer of skin grows underneath the current one. As soon as it is complete, the old skin peels away, leaving behind a snake-shaped shell along with any parasites that may have been attached.

To leave their old skin behind, snakes may go for a swim to allow water to loosen the old skin even further. When they’re ready to shed the old layer, they create a rip in the old skin, usually in the mouth or nose area. They often do this by rubbing against a rough, hard object, such as a rock or a log. I wouldn’t help but notice that you like and reblog a lot of Peaky Blinders fanfics. Which are you favourites? I’m new and looking for something good to read

Hi, anon!! Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I’ve been on holiday for the last week.

This is probably gonna be a very long list as I honestly love any piece of peaky blinder fanfic I read and think that it’s astounding how many talented writers are in this fandom! (Just a heads up I tend to lean more to Tommy, Alfie, and Michael fics more than anything so if you prefer Arthur, John, or any of the girls I’m sorry!!). Also, I’m gonna just tag my favourite writers and their master lists as this is probably more efficient than individual fics, but I will put links to specific ones if I think you should give them a read.

@prettieparker86 Masterlist:  “In The Bleak Midwinter” -  This series I highly recommend and it is for Tommy

@buckys-beach  “A Shelby Caught Out With A Solomons” : They don’t have a master list so I’ve linked my favourite series

@torialeysha   Alfie fics: No master list and I couldn’t get a link of just “cold Feet”  so I just tagged all Alfie fics.

@everyonesawhoregrace  master list: I recommend two series, one is called “Temptations” and the other is called “psycho”.

@bonniebird master list: Covers most of the characters

@blinder-secrets master list: Lots of writing

@birminghamblinders master list: mostly for Tommy

@shelbylimiited master list: Some family imagines as well

@xcheekyblindersx master list: A mix of smut and fluff

@wishfulwriter master list: Lots of choices

@all-about-that-fandoms peaky blinders: I couldn’t find a master list so I’m just tagging all their peaky blinder related stuff

@peakyimagines master list: A good name

@blinderbrothers master list: A few more fics for Arthur

@collecting-stories master list: lots for everyone

@peakyblindersimagineblog  They reblog a lot of single fics so you don’t have to read series

@peakywritings master list: lots of short imagines

@peakyblinders1919 master list: lots of series to read

@tommysmutnothingbut : I think they may have deactivated but their smut was amazingly detailed

@lucachangretta master list: writes for luca

@hardyimagines master list: Its Just for Alfie

@johnsheiby master list:   Does more for the brothers and does smut                                                                                                                               I’m never going to be able to fit and list everyone who writes for Peaky blinders on this list but these are the writers/blogs that come to mind. Each story, fanfiction, imagine, headcanon, and blurb is written for free by everyday people in their own time (This mini-rant wasn’t caused by you anon, it’s just something I needed to get off my chest) Each piece is amazingly written and every plot is incredibly put together! Fanfiction is a privilege and everyone who writes it is amazing. These stories are honestly awesome and it is an honor to read them. I hope this has given you some choice anon in what to read and I’m glad I could help!❤

The fourth dimension has a sixth platonic solid as well, and I have no idea if it also gets projected in this sequence. I can’t even conceive of the object yet.

How To Use Technology As A Learning Tool

How to use technology as a learning tool

With technology at your fingerprints, the learning possibilities are endless. Today, there are countless apps, websites and programs that can help you gain new skills and do well in school. However, it is sometimes hard to find the best resources for you.

Using technology as a learning tool is a great way to add to your CV, resume, or college application. Whether it be notetaking, revising or learning a random skill, below I outline some of the best ways to leverage the power of technology for your educational benefit:

Record your classes with Audipo

How many times have you sat in a lecture and absorbed absolutely nothing? Rather than having to borrow notes from your friend — who was probably also half-asleep — Audipo makes it easy to playback recorded classes.

All you have to do is record the audio from your class and upload it onto the app. Audipo allows you to change the speed of the recording, rewind and skip forward with ease. It even remembers where you left off, which is useful if you don’t have the time to sit through an entire recording at once.

Learn a language using Duolingo

Who doesn’t love the cheery, albeit somewhat threatening, Duolingo owl? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it is likely that you have heard of this ever-popular language learning app (or at least seen the memes).

Duolingo gives you the opportunity to learn 22 languages for free. With an engaging and interactive design as well as a lesson plan for every level, Duolingo offers a personalised learning experience with immediate grading and motivating rewards.

Knowing multiple languages is a great skill to have, so if you have some free time I definitely recommend this one.

Take beautiful digital notes with Evernote

If you’re the type of person that prefers digital notes over paper, Evernote is for you. Digital notes have the advantage of being accessible everywhere, easy to read and eco-friendly. Available on mobile and PC, Evernote is my software of choice for beautiful notes.

Learn to code with Codecademy

In our increasingly digital and technology-driven world, coding is an in-demand skill. Codecademy offers free classes in 12 different programming languages including Python, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, SQL, C++, and Sass, as well as markup languages such as HTML and CS.

With just a little time, you can learn the basics of coding and add a valuable skill to your CV. Not only will Codecademy help your employment prospects but it is fun, interactive and engaging.

Revise with Gojimo

Gojimo markets itself as ‘the UK’s most popular revision app’. But even if you’re from America, you can probably benefit from this app. Gojimo gives you access to over 40,000 practice questions for free, including 28 GCSE subjects, 20 A Level subjects, and SAT, ACT and AP preparation.

It is a simple revision app which allows you to access special quizzes, track your progress and check off topics as you learn them.

Make flashcards using Quizlet

It is widely known that flashcards are one of the most effective study methods. Testing yourself not only helps the understand of your subjects but is also useful for memorising specific facts.

Quizlet is a great app/website to make (and share!) flashcards for free. You can even search for and access flashcard sets made by other students. Quizlet offers many ways of helping you revise flashcards, from regular testing to interactive games, there is something for every type of learner.

Mind map with AYOA

Previously known as iMindMap, AYOA is a Mind Mapping software tool. Mind maps are a great way of connecting ideas and summarising content, especially for messy learners! AYOA allows you to create beautiful, aesthetic mind maps to help you revise. You can try it for free.

Make a cheat-sheet with Cheatography

Cheatography is used by students and business professionals alike. In essence, Cheatography allows you to make your own cheat sheets as well as access over 3000 for free. There are resources about almost every subject in every language, so if you’re looking for some study material it is probably worth checking out.

Learn anything with Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization providing free expert-created content and resources on a variety of topics. Whether it be Maths, English or Cosmology, Khan Academy has a myriad of resources to help get you started.

There are resources for almost every course and year level, so it is my go-to source if I need some help understanding something or just want to learn something new.

Get inspired with some TED Talks

There are expert TED talks available for free on Youtube for almost every topic. Perhaps poetry is your passion, or maybe urban planning — whatever the case there is likely to be a TED talk for you. These allow you to get an insight into the greatest minds in different industries, broadening your horizons and expanding your knowledge.

Yes, it might be sitting and watching, but learning is never a bad use of your time.

I based these recommendations on my personal experience, are there any apps/websites I missed? Any resources I should check out? Let me know!

Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.

Soon after I left Mr. Edison's employment a company was formed to develop my electric arc-light system. This system was adopted for street and factory lighting in 1886, but as yet I got no money — only a beautifully engraved stock certificate. Until April of the following year I had a hard financial struggle. Then a new company was formed, and provided me with a laboratory on Liberty Street, in New York City. Here I set to work to commercialize the inventions I had conceived in Europe.

After returning from Pittsburgh, where I spent a year assisting the Westinghouse Company in the design and manufacture of my motors, I resumed work in New York in a little laboratory on Grand Street, where I experienced one of the greatest moments of my life — the first demonstration of the wireless light.

Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.
Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.
Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.

I had been constructing with my assistants the first high-frequency alternators (dynamos), of the kind now used for generating power for wireless telegraphy. At three o'clock in the morning I came to the conclusion that I had overcome all the difficulties and that the machine would operate, and I sent my men to get something to eat. While they were gone I finished getting the machine ready, and arranged things so that there was nothing to be done, except to throw in a switch.

When my assistants returned I took a position in the middle of the laboratory, without any connection whatever between me and the machine to be tested. In each hand I held a long glass tube from which the air had been· exhausted. “If my theory is correct,” I said, “when the switch is thrown in these tubes will become swords of fire.” I ordered the room darkened and the switch thrown in — and instantly the glass tubes became brilliant swords of fire.

Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.

Under the influence of great exultation I waved them in circles round and round my head. My men were actually scared, so new and wonderful was the spectacle. They had not known of my wireless light theory, and for a moment they thought I was some kind of a magician or hypnotizer. But the wireless light was a reality, and with that experiment I achieved fame overnight.

Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.

Following this success, people of influence began to take an interest in me. I went into “society.” And I gave entertainments in return; some at home, some in my laboratory — expensive ones, too. For the one and only time in my life, I tried to roar a little bit like a lion.

Soon After I Left Mr. Edison's Employment A Company Was Formed To Develop My Electric Arc-light System.

But after two years of this, I said to myself, “What have I done in the past twentx-four months?” And the answer was, “Little or nothing.” I recognized that accomplishment requires isolation. I learned that the man who wants to achieve must give up many things — society, diversion, even rest — and must find his sole recreation and happiness in work. He will live largely with his conceptions and enterprises; they will be as real to him as worldly possessions and friends.

In recent years I have devoted myself to the problem of the wireless transmission of power. Power can be, and at no distant date will be, transmitted without wires, for all commercial uses, such as the lighting of homes and the driving of aeroplanes. I have discovered the essential principles, and it only remains to develop them commercially. When this is done, you will be able to go anywhere in the world — to the mountain top overlooking your farm, to the arctic, or to the desert — and set up a little equipment that will give you heat to cook with, and light to read by. This equipment will be carried in a satchel not as big as the ordinary suit case. In years to come wireless lights will be as common on the farms as ordinary electric lights are nowadays in our cities.

The matter of transmitting power by wireless is so well in hand that I can say I am ready now to transmit 100,000 horsepower by wireless without a loss of more than five percent in transmission. The plant required to transmit this amount will be much smaller than some of the wireless telegraph plants now existing, and will cost only $10,000,000, including water development and electrical apparatus. The effect will be the same whether the distance is one mile or ten thousand miles, and the power can be collected high in the air, underground, or on the ground.
