I know I'm very late to this compared to everyone here (I'm 30) but I just finished reading the odyssey for the first time and I'm... my heart can't handle it. I already want to read it again. Why did I get to this this late? Anyway, I wanted to ask if you have any recommendations for interesting articles or other books about Odysseus, apart from the Iliad? And Penelope, of course. I just love them. I'm asking you 'cause I saw your posts about Odysseus and Calypso / Circe, and found them very interesting and insightful! Thanks in advance

There's no bad time in your life to read the Odyssey for the first time! I'm so glad you found your way to it and enjoyed it!

In terms of books and articles about the Odyssey, I've been out of the academic world for long enough that I feel like I'm no longer a particularly good source of advice, but I'll toss out a few old favorites:

the film O Brother Where Art Thou - a retelling of the Odyssey set in the Deep South during the Great Depression

the novel the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood - a feminist retelling of the Odyssey from Penelope's point of view

technically it's more about the Iliad, but Somewhere I Have Never Travelled by Thomas Van Nortwick is a scholarly work that's informed my thinking on Homeric storytelling a lot

And I found some articles on the Odyssey that look fascinating freely accessible (no login needed) on JSTOR! Since some of these are public domain, they may not closely track modern scholarship, but if you're just kinda vibing with the Odyssey right now and are looking for more food for thought on the subject, this ought to get you going in interesting directions.

Also, if you liked the Odyssey, I think you'll love Greek tragedy! I recommend starting with Sophocles' Electra, Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Aeschylus' Oresteia, and maybe Euripedes' the Trojan Women.

Thanks for the ask, and happy reading!

She Asked Forgiveness, And I Gave It. But The Truth Is, I'd Forgiven Everything She'd Done, And Everything
She Asked Forgiveness, And I Gave It. But The Truth Is, I'd Forgiven Everything She'd Done, And Everything

she asked forgiveness, and i gave it. but the truth is, i'd forgiven everything she'd done, and everything she could do, long before that day. for me, that was no choice. that was falling in love.

Digital fanart of characters from The Raven Cycle. From left to right there is Gansey, Blue, Noah, Adam and Ronan, walking through a forest. They're surrounded by trees and bushes, and there is a small stream in the foreground. A raven is flying above them. The drawing is mostly drawn in shades of green and brown and has a grainy paper texture.

it’s just so frustrating when someone can only talk about a female character in terms of what she “deserves” in a greater moral sense and never about what she wants and willingly puts herself through by means of having agency and what serves her narratively

simply not having heard of something isn’t like a personal moral failing that u need to get defensive about. but also, an intellectual comfort zone in which Black women’s work is never recommended to you & you never seek it out—that isn’t cultivated in a cultural vacuum. its not innocent. and if you’ve been through school i guarantee you’ve had Black women’s work assigned to you before so like what gives

Promotional poster for The Moonlit Knight by L. R. Tourmaline.

At the top it reads: Arthuriana Meets Persian Myth

In the center is the book cover featuring Gawain and Ragnelle in a blue cast.

The tropes/details are listed on either side. They include:
- bi4bi polyamory
- zoroastrian theology
- british hero/persian heroine
- ensemble cast
- magic problems require magic solutions
- 6th century persian politics
- enemies-to-lovers
- riddles are poetry/poems are riddles
- self recognition through the other
- they don't know they're trapped in the narrative

At the bottom it reads: coming out 1st July 2025

THE MOONLIT KNIGHT, my first book in the ELEGY OF AN EMPIRE series, is coming out 1st July 2025!

The Lady of Ruby was a beautiful dream from which Sir Gawain never wanted to wake. King Arthur's famous nephew, Sir Gawain of Orkney, Knight of the Round Table, is known by many names: Hawk of May, Dawnbreaker, Maiden's Knight. With great acclaim comes even greater expectation. When a challenge from Persian knight Sir Gromer Somer Joure draws Gawain east of the Mediterranean Sea, a new confrontation arises from Gromer's outspoken sister. The Knight of Maidens' reputation could be his undoing. Zoroastrian widow Osti Mahtab, granddaughter of Iran's revolutionary Mobed Mazdak, detests violence. And the men who make names for themselves through it. While long resigned to her devout life within the Old City's walls, she would sooner die than admit her little brother's challenger to the inner sanctum uncontested. Yet by forestalling this game of blows betwixt paladins, has Mahtab inadvertently entered the fray herself? In this retelling of The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle, Persian mythology clashes and mingles with Arthurian to create a new and exciting tale of romance, self-discovery, and fantasy. The Moonlit Knight marks the first installment of the Elegy of An Empire epic that promises to entice old and new fans of the legends for years to come.
