It’s not a one-size-fits-all box but anyone can start developing these fundamental traits at any time in their lives:
Confidence: Believe in yourself and your abilities even if you don’t have all the answers. Be brave enough to try, fail, learn, and grow. Speak your mind even if you’re not completely sure you’re right, graciously receive feedback from others, and push yourself to improve each and every day.
Presence: Be respectful, avoid being distracted when interacting with people, put your phone away, maintain eye contact, and stay engaged. Listening is a key component of strong communication skills because you can’t respond to what you don’t understand– listen intently and “be where your feet are.”
Honesty: Have high integrity in all matters, don’t lie/cheat/steal, and be courageous in delivering the truth even if it won’t necessarily make people happy. Lying is a sign of cowardice because it’s done to avoid pain, responsibility, and discomfort. Honesty is a sign of courage and courage is a foundation for respect.
Authenticity: Express yourself genuinely, have a consistent set of values, and don’t radically change your personality based on where you are and who you’re with. Take the time to figure out who you are, your likes and dislikes, your boundaries, etc so that you can communicate them to other people.
Reliability: Be someone others can depend on, be consistent, and keep all your promises. Reliability is the cornerstone for trust and trust is what inspires loyalty. Be a man or woman of your word so that people will listen when you talk and act when you ask.
Maturity: Manage your emotions well, avoid jumping to conclusions, avoid overreacting to situations, and focus on the big picture to find solutions instead of finding more problems. Persistent negativity is destructive so be constructive, look for lessons and the silver lining, and look for a path forward in difficult times. Charismatic people inspire hope and devotion in impossible situations by seeing and fighting for the best possible outcome.
