The further I read this, the more I headcanoned that ‘Mysterious Chessmaster Ozpin’ is a front that he puts on for literally anyone who isn’t his own staff or students.

From the interrogation room through initiation, he was gritting his teeth to keep all the Dad Energy from escaping.

He brought a goddamn plate of cookies the first time he ever talked to Ruby, probably just because Summer said how much she loved them at some point, it was probably Summer’s recipe.

Glynda came to show him how fake Jaune’s transcripts were and he probably tapped his mug on ‘Accept’ before she got two words out.

He let two teenage bandits enroll in his fight college to try to reform them.

People used to joke about it, but he probably does just wander the school looking for students who look troubled. He is/was a father, and now he has dozens of youths he is explicitly responsible for, many of whom are orphans. You cannot stop this guy giving guidance.

Ozpin keeps up the ‘Wizard’ act for the council, the citizens, and any of the applicants who aren’t students yet. Even other headmasters and their students, maybe. All to keep his dramatic image and his position as Headmaster. All so he can keep helping good kids be better so they can save the world.

I really love your idea of Uncle Oz. But in the early volumes, Ozpin was given the 'menacing, plotting' Dumbledore treatment. Which is weird, because by the time we have the backstory he's just genuinely a caring, wonderful person in an awful situation. Which is also weird, because the hands-off man we know doesn't map to the idea of who the guy must have been to set up the school in the first place. Oz seems like the prime example of the show actively not always knowing where it's going.

Especially since, looking back, I honestly believe that the vast majority of said “menacing, plotting Dumbledore treatment” came from viewer expectation and very little was built into the text. Meaning, this is the Harry Potter era watching a new show. We see an older, white, clearly powerful, somewhat eccentric headmaster and go, “AH HA. I know where this is heading,” even though canonically Ozpin barely does anything to generate those feelings in the story. I’ll admit the “You have silver eyes” line is easily the most damning - What does that mean?? What does he want with Ruby??? - and we have the moment where Yang comments that he’s “off” during the speech, but both of these things happen within the first few episodes. Following that, Ozpin’s mysterious/manipulative persona is obliterated. Not just through all the legitimately good things we see him doing (counseling Ruby, talking to Blake, bending rules to help deal with the White Fang, etc.) because admittedly that all could have still been a part of some larger manipulation. AKA, Ozpin is grooming this group to do his dirty work like Dumbledore groomed Harry. But that reveal never comes. Instead, Ozpin encourages the group to leave if it’s not their own, active decision to help. He doesn’t manipulate people into working for him, he deliberately discourages anyone with doubts from continuing on because doubts, as we’ve seen, lead to people betraying the cause. Just as importantly, the ‘shady headmaster’ persona fails because we learn what his secret is. What’s Ozpin hiding? The fact that there’s a war on. What’s he doing about that? Something nefarious or at least ethically dubious? Uh... no. Actually he’s just doing the best he can with limited options. It’s like if in Prisoner of Azkaban we got to follow Dumbledore’s perspective for multiple chapters, learned pretty much all there is to know about the war, and likewise confirmed that Dumbledore was never attempting something as horrible as raising a kid for slaughter.

Really, the text only starts treating Ozpin as legitimately shady around Volume 5 with the whole bird transformation stuff, which as we’ve discussed was just stupid. Then it was hinted that he had some other, terrible secret hidden away, we waited a whole volume to find out what it was... and then it wasn’t terrible at all. Salem is immortal? Anyone who thinks about this war for five minutes can figure that out. Is it Ozpin’s fault that Salem is immortal and trying to kill us all? Uh... no. No it’s not. So... why was he supposed to be shady again?

Emerald rushed over to Yang, shaking as she checked over the blonde. She had watched her be fished out of the grimm river and could already see a bit of a change happening to her. “Come on Yang, get back up! You can die now! Not while you still need to get Oscar!” 

Yang coughed as a bit of grimm goo came out of her mouth, slowly starting to get up. “T-that worried about me?” 

Emerald pulled Yang into a kiss. “Oh thank the gods you’re alive.” She pulled back and slapped her. “You could’ve died doing that!” 

Yang smiled and rubbed her cheek a bit. “It was worth it for a kiss from you.” 

“Unbelievable! You should’ve just let me die instead of risking your life for me!” Emerald’s frowned slowly changed to a smile. “Thank you though. I… I owe you.” 

Yang shook her head, looking her body over as she saw portions of her looking grimm like. “Let’s… get out of here. I need to figure out how to fix myself.”

Cinder: (At dinner with Jaune) Ah, isn't this nice? A walk through the park, a discussion of our deepest desires and fears, and now a candlelight dinner with a handsome like yourself. This is really a dream come true.

Jaune: Nope! Not even in your dreams.

Cinder: (Jolts awake) What the-?!

Jaune: “I need to go watch my sister’s baby.”

Neo: *Signing* ‘But I’m baby.’

As with all Jaune ships, the baby-crazy starts when a girl sees him playing with Adrian.

Honestly, while I get people enjoy that trend for ships. I’d say it’s not so clear cut for Neo.

Neo sees Jaune with Adrian, and it doesn’t do too much. She adores that caring side of him, but whenever she sees him with Adrian, she gets frustrated that the attention is not on her. She’s always frustrated when the attention isn’t on her. She’s never really been big on kids and seeing him with one doesn’t make her jump at the thought of having one. They have a lot of time to live before she heavily considers that, but if she were ever to have them,(eventually) she would be very glad for him to be the father.

If only there was someone around who could help heal serious wounds...

"Hey, Jaune," Yang wearily greeted, shivering from being soaked head to toe outside of Jaune's door, "uh, I kinda need a favor from ya." In her arms, she held a soggy blanket.

And in the blanket, wheezed a dark-haired girl with wolf ears.

"You stupid mutt!" The others whimpered and cowered in the corner as he kicked her in her ribs. "When I tell you to eat, you fuckin' eat!" Every yelp was treated with another kick, and every kick with another yelp.

Jaune looked at his arm. The wound was deep, if the oozing dark red was any indication. He hissed through his teeth as he ran to the kitchen. Where was that damn first aid kit?!

"Zha-Zha!" Ruby yelled with excitement. She bounced up and down at the sight of her best friend as he walked to the front door. She began scratching and barking at the door, eagerly waiting for her sister to open it.

"You can't control me." Ruby tore off the collar, a steely look in her eyes. "Not anymore."

Poor boy is gonna get a complex.

Yang: can’t believe this is finally over.

Ruby: i know, me too.

Weiss: what do we do now? I mean, with the relics, we can’t leave them all together, it would be really dangerous.

Nora: then we should throw them away right? That way no one will ever find them again.

Ren: we used the power of the maidens to finish salem, so i don’t think we can use the vaults anymore, and considering they attract grimm it would be better if we threw them somewhere far away from population.

Oscar: why don’t throw it in the ocean? people won’t find it there and the grimms would stay surrounding it, but since they’re gimms they won’t use them, that way even if someone tried to get them he would have to deal with several underwater grimms.

Ruby: thats a good idea.

Yang: sounds good for me too.

Blake: then i think is decided, we’re throwing them in the ocean.

Jaune: well, before we do that, i was thinking about something.

Ruby: what is it?

Jaune: we never really used our third question for the relic of knowledge right?

Weiss: yes, there’s one last question available since we managed to defeat salem without asking her anything.

Jaune: *picking up the relic of choice* then i know what i’ll ask her.

Ruby: jaune, what are you-

Jaune: jin.

*time freezes around them and a blue mist comes up before a tall blue woman shows up*

Jin: hello again childrens, its been awhile.

Ruby: *sheepishly* yeah, it is.

Jin: i still can answer one more question in this era, so, what is your question.

Ruby: well, i don’t know, jaune is the one who called you.

Jin: really? *turns to jaune who’s blushing and looking away* is there something wrong?

Jaune: *face as red as a tomato* d-don’t you wear any clothes?

Jin: i don’t have the need to use them, you can look if you want.

Jaune: *slowly turns to her, still trying to keep his eyes away from areas they shouldn’t stare* okay.

Jin: *chuckles* you’re a cute little one aren’t you?

Jaune: *blushes a bit more*

Jin: so, what is your question?

Jaune: well, you being the relic of knowledge and all, i think you know already what we’re going to do with all the relics right?

Jin: you’re planning to throw them in the ocean, i’m aware of that.

Jaune: so, my question is, are you happy? With y’know, being trapped alone into this relic for all this time and probably for the rest of your life?

RWBY,NR,OSCAR: *eyes wide in surprise.

Jin: *taken aback* what?

Jaune: are you happy with being trapped alone inside the relic?

Jin: …young man, are you sure that you want to use your last question for that?

Jaune: *nods*

Jin: *with a small smile* i must say im surprised, i never expected anyone to make me sutch a question, but no, i’m not happy being inside this lamp, being trapped there alone for more than a millenia isn’t exactly what you would call fun, i wanted to see the places i know on my mind, but i can’t, i am a prisoner from the relic *raising her arms* these shackles are a proof that i’m never going to be really free *looks down slightly* my job is to answer questions and thats what im going to do for the rest of my existence; or at least until the relic of knowledge exists.

Jaune: so, you can’t really be free because of the lamp?

Jin: yes, unfortunately.

Jaune: but what if the lamp didn’t existed?

Jin: it doesn’t matter, no one would risk a relic with unlimited knowledge just to free someone like me, my fate has already beeb decided, i’ll stay here forever.

Jaune: you’re wrong, we are the ones who decide our fates, no one can do that for us.

Jin: im afraid i can’t do that, not while i’m still trapped by the lamp.

Jaune: then lets take care of it *unsheathes his sword coating it in a bright white aura*

Jin: wait, what are you-

Jaune: HRRAHH *slashes the lamp breaking it completely*

RWBY,NR,OSCAR: *drops jaw on the ground*

Jin: *eyes wide and completely speechless* …why?

Jaune: this way you’re free right? Now you can choose your fate and decide what you want to do with your life.

Jin: *stares as her shackles slowly vanish* i-

*times starts to pass again and jin gets covered in a blue mist before falling on the ground*

Jaune: *hurry towards her* jin are you oka…*blushes deeply*

Jin: *now with a fair skin tone, blue eyes, blue hair, slightly shorter than jaune in height and completely naked* what? i’m…human…?

Jaune: *looking away with a dark red blush* i-i think so *takes off his hoodie handing to her* t-take it for now, at least you won’t be naked.

Jin: *eyes start to tear up before she leaps at him, trapping him in a tight hug* thank you…thank you so much…

Jaune: *blushing to an atomic level* i-i-its o-okay, d-d-don’t worry about t-that.

Jin: why did you freed me? I don’t think i can answer big questions without the relic.

Jaune: *trying to ignore the embarrassment and her naked chest against his shirtless torso* w-well, n-no one should b-be treated like t-that, i c-couldn’t let y-you t-t-trapped in there, n-now y-y-you c-can choose w-what to d-do with y-your l-life.

Jin: so, i can choose whatever i want?

Jaune: *nods*

Jin: *smiling and hugging him closer* then i want to stay with you, forever and ever.

Jaune: *blushing to a solar level* wait! What!?

Yang: is it me or jaune just smooth talked a hot ancient relic into being his girlfriend?

Weiss: honestly, i gave up trying to understand these things a long time ago.
