The recent executive order signed by President Trump, ending automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. to parents without legal status, is a step backward for the principles this country was founded on. The move not only disrespects the dignity of families living here, but also undermines the fundamental values of inclusion and equality that define America.
For people of color, especially those who are part of marginalized communities, this policy is a painful reminder of the long history of exclusion and discrimination in this country. Indigenous peoples, who have always had a right to shape the future of this land, are similarly affected by policies that seek to erase the rich diversity and culture that are foundational to America’s identity.
As a nation, we should strive to be more welcoming, not less. Ending automatic citizenship challenges the rights and humanity of many, including those who were born here, and undermines what makes America truly great—its embrace of diversity, equality, and the belief that all people deserve a chance to contribute to the American dream. Experts agree that this executive order is unconstitutional and goes against the very ideals that have allowed America to thrive. The move is wrong, and it diminishes the respect and dignity that all people—regardless of their background or immigration status—deserve.
