So when I was in middle school and realized I'm not straight I remember feeling so alienated in public discourse because gay people were treated as a culture war talking point. and we would have literal school assignment debates in class on whether people like me should have rights. Very few people Knew this about me outside a couple friends but it felt like gay people were treated as a theoretical concept and not actual living human beings who could be sitting in the room while non gay people discussed if they should be allowed to live. I would go online and see such undisguised virtriol about people like me-- even 'allies' seemed to treat me as a Concept or Political Ideology instead of a person. It's such a bizarre feeling, but as the years went by at least people seemed to see me as a human being who could exist and maybe be in the room while talking about this kind of stuff. The feeling of being An Ambiguously Real But Conceptual Forcibly Politicized Entity slowly went away. So it is nostalgic in the absolute worst fucking way possible to be trans right now and feeling the exact same thing I felt back then.

My favorite character interpretation for both Jonathan Sims and pre distortion Michael Shelley is that they’re a little odd in general even without all the fear entity stuff.

Jon stares just a little too long when makes conversation. Michael moves in a sudden jerky way that would remind most people of a spider moving its legs. Jon always looks a little too…stiff. Like he’s a porcelain doll sat against the chair instead of a man. Michael never walks flat on feet, he noticeably puts his weight on either on his heels or his toes.

Jon’s eye, hair, and clothing colors always look a bit dull somehow. Like someone drew him and then turned the contrast down. Michael’s fingers and toes are noticeably long and quite a few people have told him that he has the longest fingers/toes they’ve ever seen.

I could pretend this headcanon is profound commentary on their humanity, but honestly I’m just very fond of viewing Jon and Michael as cryptid adjacent.

The way I’ve started to make sense of it is that the gods aren’t actually related to each other. They have no common DNA (like the god version of DNA, since they don’t have normal DNA), but they do have DNA of their own. Meaning the gods can pass on their own genes to demigods, but don’t share genes with each other.

This explains how their children can resemble them, since they did get their genes, and also means that children of the same godly parent are actually siblings.

It also means that two demigods who would be considered “cousins” (like Percy and Nico) aren’t actually related, since this way, Hades and Poseidon aren’t related. They are brothers, but don’t share any DNA.

Idk this is just the logic I use to avoid making all the ships incestuous.

I just realized some people don’t ship some PJO characters like Percy x Nico because they are cousins

I get that some people just prefer to stay with canon and don’t want to change it

But some people don’t ship because they are cousins even though if you look at their family “tree” Will is Nicos second cousin technically same with Percy and Annabeth
