Arecibo  to be Decommissioned

The words 2nd largest ground based radio telescope is to be decommissioned after 2 of the cables holding it in place have snapped, and caused considerable damage already to the dome. 

It’s iconic build has graced James Bond movies, but it’s the actual work that will be most remembered by those in the Astronomy world. It was instrumental in confirming Mercury’s rotation period, for the work on Pulsars.

Home astronomers may also fondly recall the Seti@Home screensaver that drew it’s data from Arecibo.

But alas, it has completed it’s work and will not be forgotten.
