High tide
watercolor and pen on crepe paper
Santa Barbara 1980
I have had a life long love affair with the Pacific Ocean. I did this painting years ago when I was living in Santa Barbara on the California coast. We'd go on long road trips up the coast highway. Have you ever spent the night on the beach at Big Sur? Put it on your bucket list.
I now live on the other side of the ocean on a small island in the Philippines. We go on road trips up through the coconut jungle mountains to this little beach town we know. The northern coast of the island faces the Pacific Ocean. The deep blues of the tropical sea are literally intoxicating.

I've been doing some artwork for my musician friend Pedro UK. Some of them have turned out nicely.
Here are some of the images we used for his music.

We're going on a road trip today. Up to the north coast of the Island. We'll pack the van with my kids and ten or so cousins. And lots of food. And have fun 🤣
Let me tell you about blue...
The Pacific ocean is so beautiful.
colored pencil & pen, monrovia 1996
I started drawing these swirls. And then I went nuts drawing swirls. I must have drawn 50 of these swirl drawings. I drew them at work and at home. On my napkin at the restaurant. It was all I wanted to do. One day a friend came to my place. When she saw I was drawing another swirl drawing she made this sound of exacerbation and said, "Pat! what's going on?"
Tbh I felt a little embarassed. So I moved on to drawing squares...
I still have a bunch of those swirl drawings.
I really like this one.

The BUDOS BAND
colored pencil, calbayog city, 2025
I was doing this one all in reds and yellows, and it was on fire!
So, I decided to give the fire a bit of definition with dark blue lines, and, I might have gotten a bit carried away with the blue, but then, and I'm not sure why I didn't expect this but, I got these lovely browns.
We call that serendipity.
As a side note, Sean, my nine year old son says this is the worst drawing I've ever made..
He's a harsh critic.

I just want to say thank you. Your art offers a different perspective. I haven't had very much energy lately, but scrolling through tumblr and seeing your latest piece. I don't know what to say. Just a small glimpse and I was obsessed. It reminded me of the fact that everything large achievement is composed of a multitude of small goals. Art can change the direction of the world, and yours shifted my course a little.
Wow, thank you anonymous, you just made my day. - Patrick

Kitten invasion
watercolor and ballpoint pen
Calbayog City 2024
The kitten invasion continues. My wife set out a box of kitty litter and our new kittens have taken up residence. There's three of them. All greys with blue eyes. Our home is jumping with kitten energy.
Momma cat, a quiet calico I've known for a while, comes by periodically to check up on them.
