What you don't understand is that any joke of "Nikolai putting Aleksander on a leash" would mean the indifferece of Aleksander but the real danger would be the complete silence of Nikolai.
Nikolai would just stare and stare and observe the foolish noble in that way that would make the guy realize he may have overlooked how scary the prince/king is, because he was too focused on the Darkling. A rookie mistake.
Seriously, any grisha discriminatory joke against Aleksander uttered in front of Nikolai would make people forgot Aleksander is even there. Nikolai'd laugh eventually, a bone chilling sound that would follow them everywhere. He would make a vague comment, a threat but not quiet a threat, the type of stuff Nikolai'd had picked up from years at the sea and some meetings with Kaz Brekker.
And the best part is that they'd have to look at Aleksander after, knowing that man would enjoy every minute of whatever Nikolai is planning. It's like searching mercy from a demon with the devil beside him.
*Nikolai would react the same to those stupid discriminatory jokes, really. He hates them so much.
Look, I understand Alina needed to learn about Morozova’s work in the name of The Plot™, but how likely is that someone as old and paranoid as the Darkling would just leave his journals lying around? Originals?
The show “fixed it” by making him give the journals to David to study. Which doesn’t change the fact they’re somehow easy to read.
If ~I~ were hundreds of y/o immortal with unique records of secret research, I’d destroy them after making a copy myself using:
cipher
foreign language
rare dialect
dead language
combiantion of everything above
But hey, it’s not like language doesn’t shift in some 500+ years… yet the greatest challenge was understanding Morozova’s train of thought… not the words alone…
Nikolai: *bursts through the door*
Nikolai: "Aleksander Ilyich Morozov! We need to talk!"
Aleksander: ???
Nikolai: "Have you been lying to me about YOUR AGE?!"
Aleksander: "You have to understand, Grisha in my position..."
Nikolai: "I knew I'm dating an older man, but I didn't know I'm dating EVEN OLDER ~OLDER~ MAN!"
later that night:
Aleksander: *crying into a pillow*
Aleksander, wailing: "I'm OLD!"
Nikolai: "Awww... there there, babe... I didn't mean it."

Grisha: “General, we have news of the Lantsov Prince”
The Darkling: “Good, good, what is it?”
Grisha: “He is throwing an engagement party”
The Darkling: “Now, of all times? Who is he marrying anyway?”
Grisha: “The Sun summoner, General”
The Darkling: “...”
Grisha: “Sir?”
The Darkling: “Leave”
Grisha: *excuses self*
The Darkling: “Fuck’s sake, Alina, I’ve already tried becoming consort to a Lantsov prince in the past it doesn’t solve anything.”
#i like to imagine he did try this angle already #and just no one bothered to read a history book#or perhaps someone scrapped it from the books because it was a shameful part of their history and now everyones forggoten
