Asperitas Clouds Over New Zealand : What kind of clouds are these? Although their cause is presently unknown, such unusual atmospheric structures, as menacing as they might seem, do not appear to be harbingers of meteorological doom. Formally recognized as a distinct cloud type only last year, Asperitas clouds can be stunning in appearance, unusual in occurrence, and are relatively unstudied. Whereas most low cloud decks are flat bottomed, asperitas clouds appear to have significant vertical structure underneath. Speculation therefore holds that asperitas clouds might be related to lenticular clouds that form near mountains, or mammatus clouds associated with thunderstorms, or perhaps a foehn wind ā a type of dry downward wind that flows off mountains. Such a wind called the Canterbury arch streams toward the east coast of New Zealandās South Island. The featured image, taken above Hanmer Springs in Canterbury, New Zealand, in 2005, shows great detail partly because sunlight illuminates the undulating clouds from the side. via NASA
This waterfall is called Honokohau Falls and it is located in the West Maui Mountains in Hawaii.
The falls drop from atop the mountains into a pool halfway down the cliff face. The water spills from a small pool and plunges another several hundred feet to another pool at the bottom of the mountain. The total drop of this waterfall is 1,119 feet! The only way to view the waterfall is by helicopter since the area where it is located is in an inaccessible section of the valley.

Video by Bertie GregoryĀ @bertiegregoryĀ | A harp seal pup takes its first swimming lesson in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Quebec, Canada. This species has an extraordinary breeding cycle. Females give birth to pups on moving ice floes. They suckle the pup for just 10 to 14 days. During the last few days of this short period, they encourage the pup to get into the water to help them learn to swim (as seen in this video). After the swimming lessons, they abandon the pup. The females then mate with the males that have been waiting nearby, before heading north to their feeding grounds. The pups at two weeks old are left alone with nothing to eat. To see these awesome animals in action, check out my new online series āWild_Life: The Big Freeze.ā Available on National Geographic YouTube and at natgeo.com/wildlife.
