"I had [John] down as a coffee-boy layabout, as I used to call him, and thought he was rather arrogant. But when I got to know him – it's quite tragic really. I had an unhappy childhood, too, so there was a bit of an understanding there, although we never talked about it. I remember Stuart Sutcliffe saying that he once saw John at the top of the stairs at art school, crying on his own. That, to me, was the real John, but on stage, of course, he was arrogant."

Stuart Sutcliffe’s handwritten love letter to Astrid Kirchherr
‘Darling Angel, I wait so long, it seems - forever when I have a letter from you. Are you so sad, are you a little bit angry, have you angst?? This letter is my fourth (4). Today is Saturday. I left Hamburg 4 days ago. Now I miss you more than before. I wish so much that we had our little room with the little black cushions and the records and all. On Monday I go to see about a job as a teacher, when I get a job then I will look for a flat for us. Darling, I love you, write many letters and tell me you love me, tell me you will be my wife and love me forever. I love you so much, so much.
Stuart loves Astrid forever.’
