This is a fascinating and highly accessible look into the "element hunt" that filled out the bottom half of the Periodic Table of Elements.

It's a tale of chemistry, physics, war, international relations, incredibly petty academia politics, and SCANDAL.

content warnings for some brief discussion of the events surrounding WWII, including but not limited to fascism, the Manhattan Project (and sexism within said project), and the bombing of Hiroshima.

Animal of the Day!

Hawaiian Hoary Bat (Aeorestes semotus)

Animal Of The Day!

(Photo from USGS)

Conservation Status- Endangered

Habitat- Hawaiian Islands

Size (Weight/Length)- 25.5 g; 7.6 cm

Diet- Insects

Cool Facts- The highly endangered Hawaiian hoary bat is only found in small sections of the Hawaiian Islands due to its recent decline from habitat loss and wind turbine collisions. Living in small groups, these bats are essentially blind at night and yet it’s their prime hunting time. Using echolocation, Hawaiian hoary bats let out high pitched squeals that allow them to pinpoint the location of their prey and catch the insect midflight. During the day, they sleep in small groups in tree tops and tucked away from predators. By tracking the bat’s echolocation call, conservationists are gaining a greater understanding of the Hawaiian hoary bat’s range to create protections for these tiny friends.

Rating- 13/10 (Now that’s a face of a friend.)

Your Body's Internal Clock May Boost Cancer Treatments, Scientists Say
ScienceAlert
Our body's circadian clock affects everything from sleepiness to metabolism – and it might also influence how effective certain cancer treat

Our body's circadian clock affects everything from sleepiness to metabolism – and it might also influence how effective certain cancer treatments are, according to recent research. Checkpoint inhibitors are immunotherapy drugs that block crucial proteins from binding to cancerous tumors, meaning the immune system's T cells can more easily recognize and kill the cancer off. They are a good idea in theory, especially as the drugs are less toxic than chemotherapy, but scientists are trying to find ways to increase the impact of this approach in practice. In the US, several checkpoint inhibitor therapies are currently approved for human use, but while these drugs can treat a wide variety of cancers, they only work for some patients.

just watched the first episode of enterprise and so many of its choices are just so insane…obviously we’ve talked about the theme song but it’s not just that there’s a theme song. it’s that the song is so weird. “we’ve come a long, long way” for a show that’s a prequel. Christian rock for a science fiction show. Captain Archer brought his fucking dog space.

I didn’t say I didn’t like it.
