X-Men (2000) dir. Bryan Singer X-Men '97 S01E09 "Tolerance Is Extinction, Pt. 2"
David Jenkins was not a Big Name Showrunner before OFMD. In fact, I had never heard of him before. I am not even sure what he did before OFMD, according to IMDB he wrote exactly one other show and it is one I have never even heard of before.
And he somehow got HBO to make his weird little show about gay pirates, and he got Taika Waititi to help with it, and while nobody was expecting anything of it - I mean come on guys, remember when OFMD dropped and everyone only gradually realised what it was - it became The Little Show That Could. With almost no advertising. No marketing. HBO did clearly did not expect this show to be anything, to make any real money or to go beyond one season.
But then it blew up.
Because David Jenkins was so insightful, he was so good, he brought so much fresh wind into a business where we usually can tell how the next three steps of how any show is going to go (and to be fair, a lot of us feared that Izzy's death in season 2 was coming, because all the signs fit), that we put him on a pedestal.
THE FUCKING PEDESTAL.
Yes he is brilliant. He has done stuff with OFMD that you never ever see somewhere else. He has understood that historical accuracy, as well as physics and geography, are merely backdrop for plot and characters. Completely irrelevant if you need them to be, but then suddenly important if you have a bit of story that won't work without. He understood that queer relationships deserve to be told, and when confronted with skeptic fans he learned about queerbaiting.
He took a lot of tropes and put them on their head. He structured his show like fanfic. He put thought into his stories instead of following the beaten track. He single-handedly raised the bar for every showrunner out there.
But it is still only his second show.
If he didn't shine so brightly during OFMD's first season, nobody would have expected so much of him.
And yes. He dropped the ball on Izzy.
I loved Izzy to pieces ever since season 1, I wanted to pin him to a board like a bug and study him and take him apart and put him in a blender and in situations, I loved to hate him and in season 2 I loved to love him. He is such a brilliant, complex character, so well written and so well played by Con O'Neill; the options for character analysis, relationship analysis, various interpretations of everything he has done, are simply limitless. 🤯 That is due to David Jenkins & Con O'Neill.
And David Jenkins, standing in the spotlight of all of our exaggerated expectations, decided it would have the greatest emotional impact if he killed him. He made him a symbol, for the end of The Golden Age of Piracy™, and he killed him.
He was right.
He was not original.
He fell for one of the very tropes he so successfully fought in season 1, and for the most part of season 2.
Procuring an emotional response by having a beloved character, who was just starting to embark on an exciting new journey, die tragically and emotionally, providing motivation for the remaining characters.
It was a cheap move.
It is not a Bury Your Gays. Everyone is queer on this show, you can't call something a Bury Your Gays if that would be true for every character death.
But Izzy was also old, and disabled, and he had survived a suicide attempt (that he was driven into, not chose for himself), and had just had an arc of growth and character development that could have gone on for such a long time after this. He had just learned to trust and be vulnerable and experience (gender)queer joy. God, there were so many places his character could have gone.
I loved Izzy as a character, I didn't relate much to him. But Your Mileage May Vary, and I am so, so sorry for everyone who did. You didn't deserve this.
But David Jenkins? Is still sooo much better than any generic bland showrunner that is going places in Hollywood. You want to boycott anything, boycott the big streaming services that don't have the guts to make their main characters queer, to think that "a bit of both" is inclusive or bold, and who drive out any creatives that object and try to sneak in inclusiveness. They are the enemy. They are systemic discrimination and injustice.
David Jenkins is just starting out. And he did so much better on his very first successful show than anyone who has been in the business for years. If anyone deserves a chance to prove that he can do better, it's him.
I'm sure he'll come to regret his decision. I'm sure he'll see where he went wrong, how he could have done better, and fix it in any show he might do after this. I, for one, would much rather see any show he is involved in than most of the crap that the AMPTP is putting out, now or in the future. He can only get better. And he did do a lot of things right. Never forget that. Because the majority of showrunners can't even do the minimum, and David Jenkins went above and beyond.
I think he deserves a little slack. If anyone in the streaming industry does, it's him.
It's the fucking pedestal that is the problem. It makes people who do good but are not perfect suddenly look worse than the most cowardice, opportunistic mediocre guy. But they are not and they deserve a leg up, or we are stuck with the worse option who gets support from all the wrong places. Don't fall for it.
something i've been wondering about recently is if jake and jermane age differently? like if jermane is still alive cause he ages at a different rate than jake. It would make since if they did since they aren't the same species technically.
honestly same. their ending had such an impact and was such a fitting ending for them both. it would be such a terrible choice for the writers to undo it.
This is going to make me sound like such an asshole but I really hope Simon and Betty don't like magically reunite or something. The ending of the show made it plain to me at least that Betty CANNOT be back, she's literally on a different plane of existence and perception at this point. She's a chaos god. She's probably not even really Betty anymore, but some unholy combo of herself and Golb. The ending to Simon and Betty's relationship in the original show had flaws, but I think if their going to expand on Simon as a character, it would be redundant to just... Have Betty be magically summoned back and then happily ever after. It would be underwhelming. I think it would be best if they stayed focused on Simon overcoming his grief and trauma, or at least learning how to deal with it as a start.
just finished the first two episodes of fionna and cake and can i just say the way they wrote finn in relation to simon is so. its so sad. finn spent so long in the series not being able to connect with anyone because he knew he was the only human. and even though simon is back to normal he doesnt know how to relate to finn or any of the other humans that have had to survive in the world like this. its just such bitter irony
and finn really did try n connect with him too. but before finn is human he’s also basically been raised to be a warrior all his life and doesnt know much else. u can also see hes also still kinda grieving the loss of jake?? bcs hes really desperate for companionship even with people who are disinterested in questing with him. its so fucking sad bro
FINN!!!! FIIIIIIINN!!!!! YOU ARE BEING EMOTIONALLY EVASIVE FINN!!!!! FIIIIIIIIINN!!!!!! THAT'S WHAT MARTIN USED TO DO!!!! FINN!!!!!!! YOU SAID YOU WOULDN'T BE LIKE HIM!!!!!! FIIIIIIIIIINN!!!!!
I just wanna talk about Finn for a minute and his importance to Fionna and Cake, or more specifically Simon.
Both of them are going through very very similar things right now. Simon lost the love of his life, Bety, and he's not able to move on. This is very evident from the fact that he is trying to summon Golb and how depressed he is right now. Finn also lost someone very important to him. He lost his brother and he is also not able to move on. In the Distant lands special Finn literally says that he was never able to move on from Jake's death. With them both suffereing through basically the same thing and having known each other for so long, it's obvious that they would both become very close and confide in each other to help the other through the pain they are feeling.
But, Finn has support systems he can go to. He is able to connect to the world he is in better because he grew up there. He has a better reputation then Simon does and a better understanding of the world. Simon is mentally isolated right now. He's a normal dude living in a magical world and no one else around him can relate to that, not even Finn. This separation from everyone else is expressed through everything about Simon. From the way he talks, to the way he dresses, the things he's interested in, even his color pallet.
Finn's important to the show to demonstrate Simon's separation. And if I can be delulu for a minute, I think that having Simon be around someone going through the same thing while being able to get so much support from everyone around him will worsen his mental state. Because also remember, Finn has direct friends and family. We see him with his nephew in the first couple of seconds he was on screen. He talks about how he's going to talk to Huntress Wizard. All at the same time, Simon has no one. Marci is there yes, but she can't be there for him like he needs, she has her own life. At the end of the day Simon's alone.
I think it's clever for the writers to introduce this opposition. It's a great way to emphisize what Simon's going through and bring back a great character. It makes me sad to see Simon like this though, I just want him to be happy :'(
goddd. i love summer so much i love her voice i truly envy spencer grammers cute af voice. anyways summer is like the funniest fucking character in the show to me… later chodes and lets lick tits (i know rick said that first but like. its so cute they all steal phrases from each other) are my favorites. i was like, not as sarcastic and quick witted as she is when i was 17 but shes the most relatable character of all to me. she has to be a leo or something (i wish creators were bigger on canon birthdays it’s just fun to have that info) whats your fav sum sum moment :3 :3 :3
For everyone’s record, Jane Doe has my unwavering support. Out of this entire debacle, what I want most of all is justice, in whatever form it comes in. I too am extremely hurt by all this shit and hope the show that I have poured my heart and soul into for 6 straight years can somehow still be salvaged after this fuckin nuke, but I will not stand idly by and pretend this just didn’t happen. I will stand with her.
Why dont vampires just live in space? If they travel the infinite cosmos they won't have to worry about burning up and would technically be able to Carpe more diems.
I was trying to pirate Chainsaw Man but every new tab I opened was just another Rick and Morty.
ok so i just had a thought. im rewatching adventure time and got to the episode crossover. in the episode the litch's hand gets thrown into the multivers portal or whatever it is and there is now on in every universe.
now, there is going to be an at spin off about fionna and cake and simon traveling the multiverse. my thought is that the show is gonna follow the crew going around the multiverse destroying these things.
fuck this is so tru
i knew that Nice Rick wasn't gonna last but fucking OUCH
i had to pause the ep and put my head down.
but stinky, showerless, only-in-boxers rick is sexy. my dedication to this nasty man cannot be stopped by a bit of disheveled-ness
“you can help me if you want” crying screaming throwing up
he really has grown like. fuck!!
excluding morty from the prime rick search wasn’t even necessarily cruel, he just wanted morty to be happy and i think he knew that his revenge quest was never going to make him happy. he was so clearly depressed like - is it that unreasonable for him to just want to give morty a good grandpa? of course tricking and lying to him isn’t great but i think his intentions were as pure as he could have
“it’s the most painful shit that i’ve ever had to deal with and i’m fucking bringing you into it! because you asked for it, morty”
god. he is really having a rough time
rnm episode but its a parody of "the bachelor" and its curtis bp mr nimbus, etc goin after rick and in the end it turns into like a gladiator arena death match or some shit
I JUST FUCKING REALIZED IF RICK DECIDED TO STARTS USING THE ROBOT IN THE LAST EPISODE, THEN THAT MEANS THAT HE STILL WILLINGLY WENT TO THERAPY IN ANALYSE PISS
jerry is the ultimate malewife
appreciating whatever time I have as a nprmal and stable person because I fear what will become of me on sunday at 11 pm
and while im on this train, how old is summer? what year is it? there were like 2 thanksgivings in a row with no christmas to signify anything. and summer is still somehow 17? how tf does time pass in this universe.
also more with rick's age, in the show they say that bp is 40. it would literlally not make sense for bp and rick to have met when they did cause bp wouldn't have been born yet?
ik this really doesn't matter but i cant get my mind off of it.
if the math im doing is correct, rick sanchez is in his 50's.
with what was said in the show summer is 17 and beth had her at 17, meaning beth is 34. from what we see in rick's backstory, him and diane look like their in their 20s, meaning rick is most likely 56 (beth is toddler age in the flashback and since she's walking i can guess she's around 2). so my final conclution is morty is 14, summer is 17, jerry is in the range of 33-35, beth is 34, and rick is somewhere in his 50s.

never thought I would see the day where han solo and fleabag were in the same movie together along with tom cruise
morty would most likely make roblox and minecraft videos.
i'm having dumb little thoughts about rick and morty rn, but i can literally post whatever i want- so, oh well:
i don't mean to throw shade or anything, but i would definitely subscribe to morty's youtube channel and ignore rick's.
you just know that morty's would be entertaining to watch. he'd be trying to do what other people on youtube do- vlogging, comedy skits, pranks (on rick ofc), gaming (i just know he would be the cutest lil let's player ever). he'd be awkward, the pacing would be weird, and the jokes wouldn't land- but that'd be why it worked. i like to think he'd be nervous that rick would get angry if he caught him filming him, but he's ALWAYS with rick, so he'd just be like... shakily sneaking a few frames of rick here and there. hiding the camera in his lap to get shots of them in the ship.
"h-hi and welcome back to my channel! this is my- my day on zorpatheon 9!" *loud ass royalty free music plays over his little intro* (he has 4 subscribers)
rick's would be one of those channels that's like "watch me build this robot on 3x with no music or voiceover" or "fine... i'm going to teach you how to recalibrate a lavatic reactor core, but i WILL be insulting your intelligence for even looking up a tutorial in the first place." he'd probably have morty off to the side holding all of his shit or showing each tool to the camera like a beauty guru, but when morty tries to quip a joke, he'd get so annoyed.
i miss my boy
anyone else really miss bird person or is it just me and rick sanchez???
hehehehehehehehhehehehehheh..... im a fucking looser
big shout out to all the girly girls with rick and morty hyper fixations. the pretty girls. the girls who giggle and sway their legs back and forth when rick makes a sailor moon reference and then go back to doing their makeup. you are constantly raising the bar for us all.
re-watching daredevil is not enough, i need Daredevil to fuck me
Ive been saying this since I watched the show for the first time. I love each of their characters, just not together. they're toxic.
for the love of god everyone shut up about mattelektra being cute, as someone who has been in a situationship with their ex/ex-best friend, head over heels in love, you will overlook manipulation, abuse, pretty much all of the red flags just to stay for whatever light they have.
you will lose yourself in the process, burn bridges and meaningful friendships to be with someone who only intends to use you and take advantage of your emotions for their betterment. that's how shitty toxic love is.
matt cut off everyone he loved and then stayed in a building that imploded for elektra, he knew he was going to get himself killed - how is any of this cute? did matt love elektra? yes! but was their relationship healthy or normal in the slightest? no, babes stop romanticizing their relationship
my exact thoughts

I find it so poetic that adventure time quite literally ended with a song saying "no matter when or where you are, we'll always be here forever." and it makes me cry EVERY TIME
