How I turned the Lego Mini F1 Cars into keychains
Supplies
- F1 mini car
- Drill with a 1/16 inch drill bit (not pictured)
- Jewelry pliers
- Super glue
- Screw eye hooks (mine were 5mm x 11mm)
- Chain
- Jump ring
- Lobster clasp
I got everything at Michaels (US) in the jewelry section (minus the car and drill)
Step 1: Glueing
The first thing you want to do is super glue all the pieces of the car together EXCEPT the piece with the logo that goes on top of the rear wing (that will come after drilling).
I used Gorilla Super Glue but you can use any super glue meant for plastic I just preferred that nozzle for this part of the glueing process. I included the Krazy Glue I used to glue the eye hooks in the picture but I would not recommend it for glueing the bricks together as I felt it left a worse “white cast” on the plastic when it was dry.
You don’t need to use a ton of glue on each piece and you really don’t want glue leaking out onto other pieces. Also make sure you’re doing this in a well ventilated area.
I wanted the wheels to still be able to spin and the first car I did this on (rip sacrificial Williams) I accidentally glued it so it didn’t spin. So to avoid that take off the white piece and wheel, separate the white piece from the two tire pieces (the rubber piece and the plastic piece), and add glue to the hole where the white piece is supposed to go. Attach the white piece, and hold it together for however long the super glue instructs you to press the surfaces together.
If you’re patient enough it would probably be smart to add the tire after the glue is completely cured to truly prevent sticking (I didn’t wait and never had issues so just make sure there isn’t glue leaking out). I tested taking off the rubber part of the tire, adding glue to the inside, and then sticking it back onto the plastic wheel piece and didn’t have any issues with it not spinning.
The piece I found trickiest to glue was the halo. At first I was going to leave it unglued but reconsidered as it feels like it would be the most prone to breakage or falling off. I don’t know what the best technique is, each car I worked on got a different method. And then you have the position the halo piece so it’s in the middle and the right height and it’s just incredibly tedious. My best tip is to go very light on the super glue as you will have glue coming out of the sides of the halo and hand piece that holds it.
I recommend doing the wheels last as they can get in the way of some of the smaller pieces when glueing.
Step 2: Drilling
I chose to drill a hole in the rear wing of the car. I haven’t tried it but you could also drill through the nose of the car and use a jump ring thus skipping the eye hook. A dremel would also work in place of a drill.
I used a 1/16 inch drill bit which was the smallest I had but my eye hooks were even smaller so I couldn’t actually screw them in and instead had to glue.
Drill into the wider part of the black frame piece. The eye hooks I used were long enough so that I needed to drill through the center.
Step 3: Positioning the eye hook
Before you continue, an important thing to consider is the direction of the eye hook and how the car will lay when attached to a chain or jump ring.
In the picture above, both eye hooks are positioned in the the same direction which works great on the F1 car that has the chain which lays flat in the same direction of the car. But on the F1 Academy car that only has the jump ring attached, it is unable to lay flat on a bag because of how the jump ring lays on it’s side on the eye hook instead of laying flat. If you wanted to attach it directly to a jump ring to put on a bag I would suggest positioning your eye hook the opposite direction. Lay everything out and try to visualize before you glue the eye hook.
Step 4: Attach the eye hook
As mentioned previously the eye hooks I used were too small to actually screw in and be secure so I had to glue them. This is when I used the Krazy Glue because it had a very small and precise nozzle so I could coat the screw part of the eye hook without drowning it in glue.
Once you know which way you want to position the eye hook, add some glue to the end and put it through the drilled hole. Make sure to hold it in place for however long your glue instructs you to. I had some trouble getting the eye hook to stay in place because there isn’t a lot for the glue to bond to so then it won’t dry. I added additional glue to the base of the eye hook to make sure it was in place.
Glue on the final rear wing piece (piece with the logo). I packed extra glue inside where the eye hook is to make sure it’s not moving anywhere.
Ideally you should then let the glue cure for however long it instructs you to (mine said 24 hours).
Step 5: Attach chain and jump ring/clasp
I used a premade bracelet from Michaels as a chain because I thought the stars would be super cute. The lobster clasps and keychain size jump rings I used came attached and can be removed from one another.
Each car in the picture has a different variation of chain jump ring clasp combination. The Ferrari has chain and a lobster clasp, the F1 Academy has a jump ring and lobster clasp, and the F1 car has chain, jump ring, and lobster clasp.
