Ancient Rome was a city in which the phallus was omnipresent, with symbols displayed in both public and domestic locations. These are bronze tintinnabulum bells (wind chimes) from a residence in 1st century AD, Empire period. National Archaeological Museum, Naples, Campania.
A tintinnabulum often took the form of a bronze ithyphallic figure or of a fascinum, a magico-religious phallus thought to ward off the evil eye and bring good fortune and prosperity.
