Prompt - Y/N Stark comforts her sister Morgan after a nightmare by singing a song that Tony used to sing to her when she was a little girl.
A/N - so this is something new that I thought of and I’m not sure if it’s going to be confusing or not, but I imagined it as like if it were a movie (the two scenes would be happening at the same time and Tony and Y/N would be singing together). the regular writing will be the present, italics will be a flashback, and the bold will be the lyrics since both are singing. anyways, I hope you all like this and let me know what you all thought!
A small scream filling the air had Y/N Stark bolting up and out of her bed within seconds. Her heart was racing as she ran across the house, her blaster already encasing her hand as she threw the door to her younger sister Morgan’s room open.
Y/N’s eyes scanned the room frantically, her breathing coming out in ragged breaths before she realized that there was no present danger and managed to calm herself down. A small whimper from the bed in the room had her turning to see Morgan sitting up in her bed with a tear stained face as she held her blanket close to her body.
The older girl felt her heart drop at her sister’s state, knowing that it had to be another nightmare. Sighing, Y/N gently shut the door and tapped her blaster once to return it to its bracelet form before she moved towards Morgan’s bed, the young girl moving over almost instantly to make room for her sister.
“Another nightmare?” Y/N questioned as she sat on the edge of the bed. Morgan nodded slightly, but didn’t speak, a sign that the nightmare had been worse than she had expected. “It’s okay. I get them too,” Y/N told her.
How couldn’t she? After the whole battle with Thanos, being dusted for five years, and then coming back and being forced to watch her father die right before her own eyes, Y/N would’ve been surprised if she didn’t get nightmares. Most of hers contained the empty blackness, the feeling of disappearing, or a repetition of her father’s death, but that was only because she had seen it first hand.
Morgan had been lucky enough to not have to see any of it, but that didn’t mean she didn’t have her own imagination that came up with new horrific images of Tony dying, even if it wasn’t what had actually happened. She was a kid and the fact that no one would straight up tell her what had exactly happened to her father meant that her mind came up with scenarios that kept her awake at night or woke her up in a cold sweat.
As the months had passed, they had started to die down, but every so often Morgan would still get a nightmare and Y/N was always the one there to hold and soothe her.
But tonight seemed different. Not only was Morgan not talking, but she wouldn’t even let Y/N touch her which made the older girl frown.
“Want to talk about it?” Y/N asked and Morgan was quick to shake her head. “It’s okay. We don’t have to. I never wanted to talk to it with Dad much when I was younger either.”
Morgan froze at the mention of their father and her eyes slowly flickered up to meet her sister’s. Y/N knew she had gained the kid’s attention, but at the thought of her father, Y/N had become the quiet one, her gaze on her fingers which she was nervously fiddling with.
“Why?” Morgan finally asked causing Y/N to snap back to reality. She sent the young girl a questioning look and Morgan lowered her blanket slightly before muttering, “Why didn’t you tell him?”
Y/N shrugged. “I was scared to I guess. A part of me believed that if I told him that the nightmares would come true, so I just never spoke them into existence. Dad never pushed it though and after a while he wouldn’t even bother asking me if I wanted to talk and would only come in and pull me into his lap as he sang softly to me until I managed to calm down,” Y/N said, a small smile on her face as images of her father singing to her flashed through her head.
“Daddy used to sing to me,” Morgan whispered. “But only when we played together outside because Mommy sang to me before bed. Daddy was a good singer.”
Y/N smiled softly. “He was, wasn’t he?” she said.
A silence filled the air for a moment as the two thought of their father. Y/N got lost in her thoughts easily and before she knew it, Morgan was looking to her with a questioning gaze.
“I’m sorry. What did you ask?” Y/N inquired as she blinked back to reality.
“Can you sing to me?”
Y/N blinked in surprise and let her eyes flicker over her sister who was still sniffling as she tried to wipe away her tears. For a moment, she swore she saw her younger self and wondered how Tony had been able to handle seeing his daughter so upset when she could barely handle seeing her sister upset.
“Of course. What do you want me to sing?” Y/N asked as she shifted slightly so that she was now leaning against the headrest while Morgan still sat up straight beside her.
“Whatever Daddy used to sing to you,” Morgan whispered almost nervously.
Y/N hesitated for just a moment as her eyes filled with tears slightly. She quickly cleared her throat and nodded her head. “Y-yeah, I can do that,” she said and the small curl of Morgan’s lips gave her all the reassurance she needed.
Y/N let her eyes flicker over Morgan’s face and she smiled softly before beginning to sing the same words her father sang to her all those years ago.
“Baby mine, don't you cry
Baby mine, dry your eyes
Rest your head close to my heart
Never to part
Baby of mine.”
A young Tony Stark glanced down at his seven year old daughter Y/N who was shaking slightly as tears streamed down her face. Her grip on her father was tight and she leaned into him almost afraid that he would disappear. However, as soon as he had started to sing, Y/N had instantly relaxed and set her head to his chest as she listened to the soft voice that sang to her.
“Little one, when you play
Pay no heed what they say
Let your eyes sparkle and shine
Never a tear
Baby of mine.”
Morgan’s eyes flickered over to Y/N and she watched her silently with a childish wonder in her eyes while Y/N wiped away the young girl’s tears. Morgan slowly leaned back down into her bed and curled up against her sister’s side as she listened to the voice that held the same familiar feeling of warmth and love that their father’s voice had held.
“If they knew all about you
They'd end up loving you too.”
Tony brushed some of the hair out of Y/N’s face and gave her a warm smile as he used his thumbs to wipe away her tears in one quick motion. “All those same people who scold you. What they'd give just for the right to hold you,” he sang. Y/N smiled softly and leaned even further into her father, her grip not so tight as she just enjoyed being in Tony’s embrace.
Y/N smiled and reached out to ruffle Morgan’s hair as she sang, “From your head.” She then touched where Morgan’s feet were, “-down to your toes.” Morgan giggled, a carefree grin on her face as her nerves began to wash away. “You're not much, goodness knows.”
Tony studied his daughter for a moment and couldn’t stop his grin from growing as he stared at the girl in adoration. “But you're so precious to me,” he sang making the young girl look up at him. He pressed a small kiss to the top of her head, Y/N closing her eyes at the small gesture. “Sweet as can be. Baby of mine.”
“If they knew all about you
They'd end up loving you too.”
Morgan was entranced by her sister’s voice and the amount of love that she felt form just knowing that she had someone like Y/N to care for her. She didn’t even hesitate before climbing into her sister’s lap, Y/N welcoming the girl instantly and wrapping her arms around her in a hug much like the ones her father had given her.
“All those same people who scold you.”
Y/N looked down at her sister in the same way that her father had every time she was in his arms. Her grip tightened just like his had and she didn’t realize it, but she was thinking the same thing Tony had when holding her. That she could sit there holding onto Morgan for hours.
“What they'd give just for the right to hold you.”
“From your head, down to your toes,” Tony sang as he tickled the little girl’s feet, a loud laugh escaping her lips as she completely forgot about her nightmare. Tony chuckled and wrapped his daughter up in a hug. “You're not much, goodness knows.”
Y/N could distantly hear the sound of her and Tony’s laughter before she let her gaze fall upon her sister. She had only known Morgan for a few months now, but she already loved the girl with all her heart. “But you're so precious to me,” Y/N sang, a smile appearing on Morgan’s face as she nuzzled herself more into Y/N’s embrace. “Sweet as can be. Baby of mine.”
Tony’s warm and soft smile appeared on his face again as he brushed the small bangs Y/N had out of her face, his thumb rubbing against her cheek in a loving gesture as his daughter stared back at him with so much love and adoration that it made his heart hurt. “Baby of mine,” he whispered, finishing the song right as Y/N threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tight. Tony smiled and hugged her back without a beat of hesitation.
Once the song had finished, Y/N let her eyes flicker over to Morgan. Before she knew what was happening, the young girl was throwing her arms around her neck and hugging her tight as she dug her face into Y/N’s neck. Y/N blinked in surprise before relaxing and wrapping her arms around her sister, kissing the side of her head softly before leaning her head against Morgan’s.
“Dad?” Y/N whispered as she pulled away to look at her father. “Yes, Y/N?” Tony said. Y/N smiled one of those childish smiles of hers before saying, “I love you to the end of the universe and back.”
“Y/N?” Morgan asked in a small voice as she nervously bit her nail. “Yeah?” Y/N muttered. Morgan pulled her hand away from her face and smiled at Y/N. “I love you 3000,” she told her.
Tony’s eyes widened as he feigned shock. “Woah. To the end of the universe and back? That’s a long ways,” he said. “But you know what?” “What?” Y/N asked, her smile disappearing as a look of curiosity flashed across her face.
Y/N eyes widened in real shock, surprised that she had earned the expression that Morgan used to tell their father. “3000?” Y/N asked behind a grin. “That’s crazy.” She then thought back to the nights with her father and smiled down at her sister. “But you know what?” “What?” Morgan asked curiously.
Tony smiled and leaned forward to press a small kiss to her forehead. “I’m always going to love you more than that,” he told her.
Y/N smiled warmly and brushed Morgan’s messy hair out of her face. “I’m always going to love you more than that,” she told her, Morgan’s eyes widening as a sparkle flashed through them.
The smile that appeared on the two young girls’ faces was enough to make Y/N and Tony grin.
But you’re so precious to me
Sweet as can be
Baby of mine.
