“You’re so beautiful, I just had to wake you up so I could see the colour of your eyes.”
“Next time, warn me when you’re going to go poetry book shopping.”
The marigolds looked beautiful, in the vase with the gold painted family, on the windowsill. The rain pounded against the window as I pressed my palm against it. I lifted the window to let the water in. It watered the plant, it watered me. The distant ring of the phone pulled me out of the crying sky. I picked it up. It was silent. I held onto it with a vice grip with my face still wet. The breathing on the other end sounded like a cry.
“Yeah,” I softly breathed, “I miss him too.”
“I would’ve unzipped the galaxy, unlocked the stars, and stolen the sun if it meant getting to feel her lips on mine one more time.”
buckynat prompt: snow, a dog, a snack, music, holding hands.
“This is not exactly what I had in mind.” She was facing him on the couch, her mouth quirked up in amusement as she watched Bucky settle himself in: he sat on the opposite end, leaving a space in between them. To give me room to stretch out later, she noted, thinking it considerate of him.
But he had yet to respond to her comment.
Instead, he carefully placed the bowl of popcorn on his lap and popped open a beer, offering it to her first before cracking open another one for himself. Once he’d taken an experimental sip and found its contents satisfying, he leaned back and extended his foot onto the coffee table.
When all that was done, he finally turned to her and noticed that she was staring. “What?” he asked, pretending he had no idea what she could’ve been referring to.
Natasha looked pointedly at the coffee table, where the DVD cover for “Snow Dogs” lay open and empty, the disc already in the DVD player.
He pretended not to notice. His face devoid of all emotion.
Oh, he’s playing that game? Natasha was never one to back down from a challenge.
They stared at each other a few long seconds, each daring the other to crack. Neither moved: an expert spy, capable of pushing her most violent emotions down into hidden depths, and an assassin - a man more than used to masking his every feeling.
This was going to be a long game of chicken.
Except that Raul Malo’s “Today” suddenly blasted through their screen as the film began to play. And Natasha lost it, laughing at how ridiculous the whole thing was.
Bucky grinned widely and tossed a few kernels of popcorn into his mouth. “Do I get to claim a prize?” he asked when she’d calmed down.
“Sure,” she said and crawled towards him.
Once they’d kissed she stole a handful of popcorn, but as she began to retreat to her end of the couch, he removed the bowl from his lap and placed it on the side table. She picked up on his intention immediately and grinned at the idea that they were spending their free time even doing this. She shifted so that she could lay her head on his lap. “I feel like a teenager at a slumber party-”
“Shh,” he interrupted, teasing, “it’s already started. This is supposed to be a cinematic masterpiece.”
“Says who?”
“Thor,” he said and then did his best impression of him. “‘Tis an outstanding piece of comedic plotting!”
Natasha snorted.
“An admirable encapsulation of the pure and true bond which may occur between man and beast. I heartily recommend that you watch it on your theatre box.”
“Well, if it’s heartily recommended…”
He lifted her hand and kissed it with a smile.
1. “I thought you said you loved me?” 2. “I wish I’d never met you.” 3. “I thought you were better than that.” 4. “I’m so sorry, there was nothing else I could do.” 5. “I didn’t mean to, it was an accident I swear!” 6. “Sorry won’t fix this.” 7. “I should have seen this coming.” 8. “What? You think I care?” 9. “I just miss him/her so much.” 10. “Please don’t leave me, not again.” 11. “My biggest regret was loving you.” 12. “Get out. Now.” 13. “I never want to see you again.” 14. “How could you do this?” 15. “You’re fucking crazy.” 16. “My heart can’t do this.” 17. “Wow, you had to go there didn’t you?” 18. “I have never hated someone as much as I hate you right now.” 19. “You broke me.” 20. “I wish I could say I hate you.” 21. “I need you to stay.” 22. “(S)He’s gone.” 23. “I am done.” 24. “Why did you love me?” 25. “I’m not okay.” 26. “You have no idea who I am.” 27. “I need you more than anything else.” 28. “I can’t take this anymore.” 29. “I’m not going to sit and watch you destroy yourself.” 30. “Did you ever love me?”
“I guess I’m just not enough for anyone to care about.”
“Bullshit. Don’t let someone else’s asshole actions make you think any less of yourself.”
“There are so many things I could do if only I dedicated myself to the process of getting there.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of being the villain?”
“I’ve let people ruin my image for too long. I’m leaving this place and things people have said about me behind.”
“It was a joke, but everyone’s taking it seriously. I don’t want to be known for that- it’s practically a lie!”
“Everyone’s been spreading that you’re a part of the mob. Is it true?”
“If there’s anything you’re known for, it’s certainly not ‘being subtle’.”
“I-I’m sorry, I never meant for all this to happen, I never meant-”
“Hey, shhhh it’s ok. You’re safe. I’ve got you…I’ve got you.”
“Just because you’re afraid of losing them, doesn’t mean-”
“Lesson one, don’t tell me anything about myself. Lesson two, learn to keep your mouth shut!”
