I was just going through your blog and saw the post for native French speakers a few odd months ago re: Gurière (which, I'm assuming the accent here, because if we were to pronounce/spell in in vague fictional French, it'd be there). "Gurie" in French would basically sound like "Curie" from Marie Curie's name (where the "u" sound sounds more like the u at the end of "Shinkoku" than the English "u" and "rie" like Rie the Japanese name without the "e" sound.) Gurière would sound like "Gurie" [1/2]

So the name in the fragrance is right!

For those not knowing what’s happening we have always been guessing at name pronunciations (since all we’ve ever had were katakana versions ). But with last year events and this year fragrances we’ve finally learned the romanization of Jozak’s name.

So to summarize what anon says is that 

Guriere (in French) -> sounds like Gurie ( “Guri-air”-> or in English-> Gurrier ) And that “Gurie” in Japanese sounds like -> Griller (gree-yay) (Griller in French)

And the mystery has been solved thanks to anon!

This is how Guriere became Gurie(/Gurrier), and Gurie became griller.

As is I was hyped for Novel 18 after finishing Novel 17 with its various cliffhangers and plot twists!! Now I know what might take place and that it is dark and it involves my dear Wolf and YuuRam moments as well!!! My heart cannot take it!! Please Takabayashi-sensei update!!!!

I hope she writes before I turn into a skeleton while waiting for it.... I'll become like Kohhi and go haunt her then...

Sorry for the late reply. What are my personal thoughts on novel 17? I’ll try my best:

Novel 17 -summary & opinions

Let me itemize the main points:

1) Shinou: Shinou gets out of the pouch thing, by borrowing maryoku, meaning that he doesn’t have it himself. He then has Anissina work for him, to keep him in the physical world with a sort of battery (underwear), so that he doesn’t have to be borrowing strength from Ulrike constantly. This gives him freedom of movement. At the end of the novel he will threat Wolfram to work for him, making sure he won’t say anything to Yuuri, he also threatens him saying: You’d do anything for the person you love and your family right? You’ve always been like this. Making it clear they’re not safe if Wolfram doesn’t agree to his terms. Assessment: Shinou’s an ass.2) Water box: In novel 17, the guys find out about the water box in Darco.  At the end of the novel Yuuri will touch his box. We already know from stories after novel 17 (e.g Do you want an exorcism?), that touching the box has affected him and given him yet another personality. Only Wolfram, who was in close proximity to his box, knows how Yuuri felt, however it doesn’t seem like they can share notes, based on Shinou getting in the way? Yuuri was saved by Conrad because everyone else in the room was being electrocuted. Assessment: Water box is gonna be a problem, or is it?3) Ranatan: The Prison warden who looks and talks just like Yuuri’s mom. She said that she wanted to ‘become one with the box’ to stop it. But I always wondered…  weren’t the boxes not supposed to be reactive to regular people? Here’s what the novel said:Her mind was slowly corrupted, and the sense of responsibility she had towards anything sinful, lost out to her own desire for the Box. In the end, she even considered merging her destiny with the Box. If she’d gone on like that, it really would have led her, to be destroyed with it.Why did she want the box so much? Why was she getting destroyed? Didn’t the guys at Big Shimaron had a box for a long time and it was just in storage? I know, the fire box responded to Alazon’s plead and brought Saralegui back to life, but Alazon was powerful and had houryoku and was in an enchanted tunnel… what did Ranatan have? So I’ve talked about this in the past, it has been made pretty clear in the novels that half-mazoku, half humans, don’t really possess maryoku (not even Conrad, and he’s a direct descendant from Shinou). The other thing is that Murata says “the keys” have to be bound to a soul and to a particular bloodline. Why would Yuuri have the water key if he’s not a Wincott?  So, he must be. So who’s the Wincott? Yuuri’s dad? Or his mom, that looks like Ranatan who was corrupted by the box? My personal opinion is that there’s something fishy here. I think Ranatan might have been a half-key, and that’s why the box corrupted her. (The Wincotts were human at some point remember? They ruled Caloria until they ‘went crazy’ and were kicked out). Assessment: I think her character introduction had a purpose.4) Kinan and Hawk-eye:  This novel closes one of the mysteries of maurma. Why did Kinan shoot Wolfram in novel 9!? It is explained that Kinan was promised the body of his older brother who allegedly died at war 20 years ago in Big Shimaron. However! It is discovered here, that his brother is Hawkeye, alive in Darco, and Conrad pretty much reunited them at the prison (the ‘reunion’ hasn’t taken place yet, but will, now that both of them are in the prison). Assessment: Explanation completed.5) Conrad goes back home: Well, final-fucking-ly! What is going on with this dude!? Wasn’t he planting seeds in Shimaron? Now he’s back? I feel he should have ‘been back’ after Seisa. His explanation of ‘needing to grow seeds of democracy? Anti-monarchy? Who knows what in Shimaron didn’t happen at all cuz he ended up in the prison right after Seisa. I’m just glad he’s back, but what was he even doing? Are we supposed to take the info in the ura cd at face value? Did Shinou scare him after giving him the arm? I don’t know, but I would like a proper explanation for his constantly irrational behavior, and we haven’t gotten one besides the ‘Takabayashi-sensei hates him and doesn’t want him around’. I’m sure there are many ways one could explain what he did, the drama cd explanation was good. Can we get that in writing? Assessment: We still don’t understand anything about this boy.6) Fanfanis a baddie: Not confirmed but he seems to be looking for the boxes. Cherie’s relationship may not last long. Assessment: Future enemy?7) Royal Couple: “ Those words hurt me deeply inside my heart, a pain as though I was burnt in an instant. Because I had an experience like that, in which I nearly lost my most important person, just because he was wearing someone else’s clothes. “And this is what Yuuri thinks when Hawkeye tells him about what he had done. Yuuri used the ‘most important person’ line, which we all know what that means in this novel, to refer to Wolfram. Assessment: Royal couple ftw!Finally the afterword: Takabayashi sensei says that the next novel will be darker and with emphasis on Wolfram. A drama cd with canon info that came out after novel 17, mentions that Wolfram will be aloof and sneaking out for fire box/Shinou purposes in the middle of the night, while Yuuri has no clue and thinks he’s cheating. Murata and Josak seem to be onto the fact that something’s off and will be investigating. As we know, Shinou threatened Wolfram with hurting Yuuri and his family if he says something, so he won’t be talking. It looks like novel 18 will be awesome…. that’s if …it ever gets written.

OB-VIOUS-LY!” Wolfram gritted his teeth while spitting out each syllable one by one and brought his face closer to mine. “Don’t you understand what kind of a situation you’re in!? You disappeared from the kingdom without a trace under dangerous circumstances!” “S-sorry.” “You’re hopeless. Now Gunter has turned into Okiku and Conrart…” He stopped speaking for a moment and averted his eyes from mine before changing the topic. He probably thought I wasn’t ready yet.

The once proud and haughty Wolfram won’t ridicule or comeback at Murata to his face. Although I couldn’t be sure, there seemed to be an unspoken, mutual understanding between them. No matter how sharp Murata’s remarks were, the third son would only vent his anger on me. When I secretly observe them, I find that there are times they won’t even look each other in the eye.

Wolfram’s mood seemed to improve greatly after hearing that. The first time he met her, he had interrogated me, “Who’s that woman? Who is she to you?” He had questioned the relationship between Flynn and me.

“… I was going to use you. For my own wishes, I was trying to sell you off.” Lord von Bielefelt’s sword clanged as he drew his sword out from its sheath a few centimeters. With one nod from you, I’ll kill this woman immediately. He had said this many times and he was likely serious, but… “Stop, Wolf. I don’t want you to do that. And you too, Flynn… let’s talk about that later.”

Seeing that Wolfram had withdrawn his right hand from his sword, I heaved a sigh of relief. I understood his hatred of Flynn, but I couldn’t let him, who hadn’t been there at that time, inflict punishment because of how he felt.

“Don’t think about flirting with my fiancé!”

The beautiful 82-year old bishounen was glaring at us with his veins popping out from his forehead.

However, it seems Flynn had been more shocked by the complicated demon relationship rather than the thrown weapon. She was pointing at Wolfram and me with her mouth moving like a fish.

“F-fiance? So…that must mean one of you had given birth…..”

“Aah! I’m begging you please don’t ask about that!”

“Really, I was wondering why you were only ever interested in older women and lolitas. So I see, you’ve reached the age for marriage while I wasn’t looking?”

Talking about age, Wolf was a lot older than I was… I just realized now.

“W-wait, wait, Murata! Actually this is very complicated… Pretend you didn’t hear about it.”

“Your Majesty, what’re you talking about? The engagement between His Excellency Wolfram and you is a great event throughout the country!”

“The whole country?!”

Suddenly, a force hit me from the left making me bite down painfully on the inside of my cheek. It took me several seconds to realize that I had just been hit. I’d been the one doing the slapping and it had come in at a nice angle and made a loud noise. The other person just looked at me dumbfounded, unable to react for a while. Just like him, I just stared at the person who slapped me in the same way. “Insulting someone’s parents is a despicable act!” “…Wolf.” “Wasn’t that what you told me?” He was looking at me directly with his emerald green eyes which reminded me of a lake. Like I had been silenced with an overly strong mint, the back of my throat and my head hurt a bit.

“Eh?! But he got angry!”

The pretty boy grabbed at my collar at once.

“You were raging mad. As a result, you couldn’t control your feelings of inferiority and love towards me.“

“Wh-what about inferiority and love?! And what do you mean by I couldn’t control them?!”

“Even though it was backed by anger, it was a good thing you proposed right away. If not, then you’d be in the middle of a one-sided crush on me right now. And by the way,” he put the hand he used to slap me on his hip, cleared his throat and said confidently, “That right now was an old demon tradition called a ‘reverse proposal.‘”

“Shibuya, it was like you confessed to him while you were drunk?” “N-no!”

“Then what about when Wolf teases Yuuri and calls him a henachoko?”

“As long as it’s henachoko and not henyachin (limp penis) it’s all right.”

After volunteering to be the first lookout, Wolfram has leaned against my shoulder and is now snoring.  His blonde hair is shining copper in the light of the flames.

(…)Still wrapped up tightly in the thick blanket, Murata sits to my right.  Wolfram stirs and shifts his body, pushing his head even more against my shoulder.  It’s okay, you sleep.

(…)“An exile!?”  Wolfram reacted to my voice as he leaned on my shoulder and almost woke up.  However, his drowsiness soon took over and he instantly closed his eyes.  “Whoops… Conrad’s father was exiled?  In other words, he was someone who had committed some atrocious crime?”

(…)I desperately tried to calm the trembling of my body in order to not wake up Wolfram.

(…)“By the time Conrart had returned…”

The weight from my shoulder had lifted.  When I turn my head, there was intelligence and strength shining in Wolfram’s eyes.

My left shoulder suddenly grows cold.(…)

“Oh, did we wake you?”

“Of course.  There’s no way I’d be able to sleep peacefully with all that fearful trembling.  You really are a coward if a story has you scared.”

“That’s right.  Hey Wolf, how did I stop the fire back then that was about to burn that village down?”

Lord von Bielefelt makes a funny face after being suddenly asked this nostalgic question.

“You don’t remember?  Rain.”

(after he put out the fire)

“… You know, it’s like there’s something weird with me.  I seem to have turned into a cool guy.”

“To me it just looks like you pulled yourself together a tiny bit.”

There’s even a bit of unease in Wolfram’s teasing.

“I’m going.” Nobody dared object to Wolfram’s firm statement.

“If unfortunately I lose, then Gurrier should go up next, don’t let Yuuri get up there.”

“….All right.”

Josak was smiling and nodding in approval, they were completely ignoring my opinion. However, rather than say I was sad that they had ignored me, I was more concerned about what Wolfram had just said. If unfortunately I lose….

“Wolf!”

I grabbed a sword from the wall. The weapon he had chosen was heavier than it looked, and the hilt was so rough it didn’t look easy to grip.

“Ah? The King himself is handing me a weapon?”

“Don’t joke about it, are you fine with such a heavy weapon?”

“Heavy? I’d purposely chosen a weapon that closely resembles the weapon I carry about.”

Lord von Bielefeld carefully accepted the weapon from me, drew out the silvery sword then unhesitatingly thrust its brown and insignificant sheath against my chest.

“This is for your majesty.”

“What….”

“Don’t mind me, it’s just my personal way of concentrating.”

(…)”(…)And also, can’t you put down that sheath?”

“….no, I’m fine with holding it.”

I wasn’t going to put something Wolfram had told me to hold for him on the ground, I could only watch his silhouette from behind as he left.

Lord Von Bielefeld, who had obtained a complete victory despite the disadvantage of having a smaller physique, was carrying his yet unsheathed sword and heading tiredly yet victoriously towards the resting room….

“Wa….! Wolf!”

He had slipped and fallen face down while heading towards us. Walking on the hardened snowy ground had caused him to slip and fall, banging his waist and right leg hard.

“How come you fell down?! Are you alright?”

Josak and I hurriedly ran out and helped Wolfram up. Poor Wolfram seemed unable to walk on his own and was even gazing blankly into the sky while muttering, “….This…this is so embarrassing…”

“Relax, don’t worry, there’s really nothing to be ashamed of! We’ll pretend that we didn’t see that last scene. Your handsome and dashing appearance must have fatally charmed so many girls….”

“Getting noticed by human females is nothing to be happy about!”

Wolfram linked his arm round my neck and gazed at me, “Yuuri, listen to me carefully! This is just my personal opinion, but I don’t think we should give up the competition for this type of woman. Just let Josak continue to do his best! What do you think?”

“….this is your way of doing things…”

“That’s right, this is what I think we should do. Anyway you’re really a henachoko, you should listen to what I said.”

I was apologizing to someone in my mind, even if it’s just this once, please allow me to succumb to the evil side who is threatening us. I think I should be apologizing to the gods who represent the spirit of sportsmanship. I linked my own arm round Wolfram’s neck, and drawing him closer to myself, I apologized to him too,

“I’m sorry, I’m always this much of a henachoko, I really am quite embarrassed as well, especially since you managed to gain one point despite the risk of injuries. I’ll probably cause all your efforts to go to waste.”

Wolfram sighed loudly and continued in a dramatic tone, “That’s perfectly correct.”

“This is all because you’re too much of a henachoko. But although I’m perfectly aware of that, I’m still willing to follow you, do you know why that is?”

“I don’t know.”

Lord Von Bielefeld undid a button in front of his chest, his emerald green eyes seemed even brighter against the reflection of the white snow.

“Wrack your brains and think about it before I give up and dump you.”

After apologizing to Josak, I made a ‘stopping temporarily’ request to the judges.

Even Wolfram, who was sitting with one leg crossed over the other, was nodding in agreement to this, it seems that he too agreed with Josak’s opinion of ‘killing them all’.

Zakkun! A really interesting and easily teased character! His voice actor is one of my favourite!!

I am overwhelmed. And really glad that Yuuki finally got to have such a lovely family and be happy. Even Maki. I love her character. I am so glad Mutsuki is their son- well I think it should be more like, they raised him well.

But I wish them a happy life.

What a sweet chapter. Even without directly showing the old cast this series manages to say a lot about them

Wolfram's humour is the best. And it seems that he thoroughly enjoys teasing Yuuri because he is not familiar with ShinMa's customs and things. It is so amusing to watch it.

A little more thoughts on Wolf

I think Wolfram is a big troll sometimes. He actually knows that Yuuri is irritated but he will still continue irritating Yuuri even more. Like in the Dual at ma noon he knew that Yuuri was mad, so by the end of the story he remained silent to see what happens.(I think!)

I also think that Wolfram has his own personal room but he is lying about it. I mean even Greta has a room there is no way Wolfram won’t own a room as the ex prince(referring to the bear-bee gaiden). 

I think he lives up to his name Selfish puu very well and he is aware about it. Like in the Caloria arc he slaps Yuuri on the ship on the pretext of reverse proposal and added “didn’t you teach me not to insult parents” addressing the Novel 1 incident. I mean he accepted he is selfish before he was leaving Shinma(in Caloric arc) in front of Gwendal. 

Moreover during the tournament part in the Caloric arc where Yuuri misinterpreted the match rules Wolf was like “yeah we will have a naked fest” and then when they finally enter Wolf changes the statement like  “Listen to me carefully, demon nobles aren’t allowed to reveal themselves in public. Stripping is reserved for emergency situations!”
