Hello? Im Getting Into Drawing And You Leg So Well? Any Advice?

Hello? Im getting into drawing and you leg so well? Any advice?

YES! Ok so disclaimer, I did not make this technique. The technique I use i learnt from Sycra on Youtube, please go check out their videos cause they are super detailed and excellent. I also learned my colour theory from their videos, seriousy good stuff. Ok so I usually start out with a hip box. How this is shaped depends on how you want ur character to look i guess but it’s roughly up turned isosceles trapezium.

Hello? Im Getting Into Drawing And You Leg So Well? Any Advice?

from here the basic measurements are about halves not including the hip box. I tend to make the thighs the same height as the torso.

Ok so here is where Sycra’s technique comes in. They call it the lightning technique i think?? you essentially draw a curvy lightning bolt then connect it up.

line over top and adjust + feet

Hello? Im Getting Into Drawing And You Leg So Well? Any Advice?

the actual composition of the leg i like to think of as tubes with one end smaller than the other. So the thighs are larger at the top and thinner towards the knee. The shin is a more pronounced curve though. You can also cross two lines over as shown and use that as a guideline.

Hello? Im Getting Into Drawing And You Leg So Well? Any Advice?

I always use the lightning technique for legs from profile since it works best. The back of the shin is curved while the front is straight unlike the thigh which seems to be soft and curvy all over aha

I hope this makes some kind of sense??????

for @breadygarden, you can complement it with this other one I made long ago and SPECIALLY WITH REAL LIFE PICTURES! Mostly this is to point out the things you gotta pay attention. Always always check the head-torso radio. You can mix it up with more body fat too!

hey so i looove body horror monster stuff .. and i noticed u do too.. i wanna draw stuff like that but i always end up unhappy with it, SO do u have any good blogs/things for inspiration/tips and also what kind of body horror monsters r ur faves and what kind of stuff do u like to see in that kind of art... write me a paragraph idc i just want inSPIRATION thanks <3

http://guydavisart.tumblr.com/http://deadwooddross.tumblr.com/http://dimetrodrawn.tumblr.com/http://empartridge.tumblr.com/are all good artists for body horror… I would also look up some of the monsters in things like guillermo del toro’s movies and more recent cartoons like steven universe/ adventure time/ over the garden wall

a lot of 80s horror has a lot of good body horror, see movies like The Thing, The Gate, The Company of Wolves, etc.

I would also look at horror movies for a younger audience as they tend to rely more on surrealism and body horror due to not being able to show a lot of blood

image
image
image

(limbs that are just way too long are /great/ by the way)video games imo tend to have pretty good creature design compared to movies, especially ones with simpler graphics. I really like the amalgamates in undertale, for instance:

image

(the endogeny is a really good example of ‘less is more’… a lot of times, a lack of features, like no eyes or a face that’s just a hole is much more unnerving than adding way too many eyes and spikes)

image

The designs also take advantage of a minimalistic art style to let the viewer make up some of the body horror… it’s hard to make sense of where everything begins and ends here, and given the character is a melting mutation, the negative space + vagueness is really effective

image
image
image
image

OFF also has some really nice monster designs… it also takes advantage of a lack of features (most creatures have no or blank eyes) as well as giving a lot of the creatures too many teeth, which always looks scary and wrong imo. Especially if they’re drawn crowded instead of spaced outlower poly monsters are also weird and nasty, possibly because their lack of more than like three angles makes them look super uncanny. there’s just something about flat surfaces + textures…:

image

human features on non human things are really cool:

image
image

people hands on something that’s just terrible and monstrous is just so gross and fun. hands are the worst. teeth are good too. with the second picture here, asymmetry is also adds a lot to the design; it’s very clearly not a natural creaturealso look at real world animals if you can! a lot of fish are weird, things like pink river dolphins and naked mole rats are pretty freaky looking.. leopard seals and their mouths… cordyceps on insects…but yeah, I think the best things you can do with body horror personally is exaggerate features (really jutting necks are super weird, for instance) and pick traits you think look horrific (a lot of people don’t like clusters of holes in the skin, teeth where they shouldn’t be, etc.)

I could explain this a lot better, but I’m lazy today. |(

Also, I made it a dude each time because drawing in boobs would distract from the underlying muscle and stuff. :Y

May I ask how you draw faces? (Technique/style-wise)

a very brief thing on how do faces. You can break the rules as much as you like (I did here a bit haha), but you’ve gotta learn them first

do you guys think you could showcase how you do different body types? (like buff skinny fat etc)

First of all, we should always practice life drawing! Your skill in drawing the figure will always be your basis to how you modify and stylize it. Creating this foundation of proportion and gesture will give you a better understanding of how to create figures of different proportions than the “average” figure.

image

Past this, we’re going to need to learn some anatomy. We need to know the basic, large muscle groups to create believable muscled characters. And, we need to know how fat is distributed (commonly) on the body to create believable fat characters. We need to know the skeletal structure to understand all of this, and particularly how some bones might show in super skinny people (like ribs and hip bones for example.)

I recommend checking out Sycra for anatomy tips.

Here’s some examples of common traits I’ve seen. By no means is this a comprehensive guide, but it’s a starting point. The best thing to do is to keep searching up guides and learning from real photos - as well as cross referencing!

hi! since u mentioned dreads earlier, i thought it would be a good time to ask if you have any tips on drawing dreadlocks!! i'm doing my best but it doesn't always turn out how i want it too, so any advice would be helpful!!

I use a lot of shorthand to draw krav fast, but here’s a loose tutorial for how i do natural dreadlocks. 1.) Draw your boy. Indicate the hairline so you know where to start. 2.) Use straight lines to indicate what direction you want the strands to hang and fall. 3.) Draw bumpy lines over the straight lines. Consider how thick you want the strands to actually be, and how they rest on the head.

image

4.) Use short curved lines to indicate where the strands twist off from the scalp and where the strand ends, curving to kind of a point. 5.) Gradually build off the individual strands from the mass of hair. You can also draw a bit of fuzz here and there, depending on how neatly twisted/kept the dreads are. 6.) erase small sections and at jewelry/charms at leisure.

Final step: color the boy.

I've always loved drawing people and especially portraits. Your art is so inspiring! Do you have any advice on drawing portraits with accurate proportion? What aspects are the most important in portraits, do you think? And what are good exercises? I'm sorry for bombarding you with so many questions! :3

Thank you! There’s one thing about drawing portraits that I don’t think I’ve ever touched on, and it’s the technique of constraining features.  Basically, it becomes easier and more intuitive to rotate the face in 3D space once your mind grasps exactly where the features are located and, furthermore, where they can’t be located.

I use a weird double trapezoid shape that I’ve depicted below in red to keep track of facial feature placement every single time I draw a face.  It follows the top of the eyebrows, touches the corner of the eye, traces down to the corner of the lips, and finally ends at the bottom of the lips.

image

The shape of the constraint will change depending on the person’s features, and it works for every angle of the head.  For me it really internalized where each part of the face was, as well as where it started and ended. It kinda helps moderate your drawings; i.e., you’ll stop drawing features that are wildly misplaced or off-sized.  I don’t literally draw this shape out every time I draw a face, but I see it in my mind’s eye 100% of the time.

If you’re still learning proportions, a good exercise is to grab pictures of people and trace this shape over them (either digitally or with a marker or something) to get an idea of what realistic constraints looks like.  Then go back to studying faces, and constantly check your drawing by tracing along the eyebrows and down to the bottom of the lips to make sure that things aren’t off (e.g., the constraint isn’t terribly asymmetric).  It takes a while to get used to, but it might help you get a good feel for portraiture.

There’s one other unrelated thing I like to do with faces, and if you’ve seen a lot of my pics you’ve already picked up on it.  If you kinda add some shading to the area on the cheek just below the eye and down to the nose, I think it adds a decent amount of depth to a face.  Don’t go overboard of course but there’s another little tip that could be of use.

E.J Sue’s “Mechaforce” Is One Of The Few “How To Draw” Books I Would Point Newbies Looking

E.J Sue’s “Mechaforce” is one of the few “How to Draw” books I would point newbies looking to get into drawing robots to. It emphasises knowing the basics (Very difficult to draw a robot properly if you can’t use perspective) and fundamental shapes and even arm techniques, and gives a neat insight into how mechanical forms work in art.

These are just a few of the examples from the anatomy section of the book. It’s currently on sale on Amazon and worth checking out, though I will note it is not a “be all end all” resource, thankfully you can fill in your knowledge gaps elsewhere.
